this thread reminds me. i gotta up a hagler-mugabi itv boxing pre and post fight vid on me youtube channel. i think monzon would have decisioned hagler. like his long range style to frustrate hagler. :bbb close-ish fight though.
I think Hagler could get around the jab, and that his ability toseitch stance and approach would make it harder for Monzon to maintain his usual dominance. Very close fight.
I think it's a great idea. You get loads of documentaries on Ali/Tyson but never hear anything about the rest on TV.
Or Sumbu Kalambay, Kalambay being probably the best middleweight ever, with the possible exception of a '77 Hagler or '87 Nunn.
If Nunn and Sumbu fought ten times Nunn would win once. They fought once. Kalambay is amongst the most skilled fighters I have ever seen on film. With a solid Middleweight resume as well (robbed against Kalule as well) he definitely deserves a shout for the top 10, and H2H, is one of the best at the weight IMO. Sumbu Vs Monzon is a crazy matchup I'm finding hard to analyse, if I'm perfectly honest. Not too often I'm stumped when pitting two skillsets against each other. I don't rate Nunn too highly to be honest. Too lazy.
Nunn didn't take a punch against Ramos or Watts - not one single shot. Absolutely, un-****ing-real. He completely dominated unbeaten Olympic Gold medalist World Champion Tate, had Roldan down in the first round and completely dominated Toney while stood right in front of James! He evaded most of Barkley's punches by using the ropes for defense!
I didn't think he was on great form against Barkley as a whole though. And he got starched by James, which lets him down if we're looking at him all round, it showed a deficiency in him. Still, Toneys best win without a doubt, and no shame in losing to James. Some incredible physical attributes, but I felt Starling took 4 rounds off him. The Kalambay win is incredible of course, but was an anomaly. If he'd done that to the rest of the Middleweight crop, yeah, I'd be a believer. But his prime was too short and he didn't do enough, he also feasted on Welterweight corpses like Curry and (size wise at least, and the lack of power meaning he'd have no worries) Starling. Not a great for me, and not a great H2H fighter either. Sorry mate. Very good though, and a pleasure to watch when on form. If we're looking at H2H beasts at the weight, **** Nunn and chuck in Roy. :deal
:good I don't think he would. An on-song Jones does everything better IMO. I reckon he'd spark Nunn. Would love to hear you analysis on this one mate :good EDIT: What do you think of Nunn Vs Sumbu if Sumbu doesn't get sparked early doors?
If Nunn fought the right fight, and didn't run like a rabbit and moonwalk, as he liked to, instead pressing the action and letting his hands go, then Roy would have kittens trying to get off properly. The lightning straight flurries and long left uppercuts behind a busy southpaw jab would neutralize Roy's leaping out-of-range hooks and leaping out-of-range uppercuts. Both had about equal speed and talent, but Nunn was better-founded, never off-balance, incredibly smooth and flowing. Plus he had the height and reach, fitness, stamina, a southpaw stance, and, straight shots (the shortest distance between two points is a straight line..).
Kalambay was more skilled, but we're talking about a 6ft4in right-handed southpaw with the fastest hands and feet in boxing and smoothest style ever seen. Nunn could outwork him, while taking more counter rights than ever before in the process.
