Anyone else think Gunner Moir puts up a decent fight against champ Tommy Burns in 1907? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klrGFMKgclY
Haven't watched it in a while but will give it a watch in a bit but have ask aswell - does anyone else get surprised every time they go back and watch Tommy Burns on film?? I think I am a bit unfairly dismissive of him when he comes up in discussions to be honest - because every time I actually watch one of his fights I'm always thinking, you know what Tommy Burns is actually pretty good!? :huh really good boxer a good hitter with that right hand aswell - am I getting overly impressed with him? Starting to think he might be close to a level with the likes of the Max Schmeling's of the world?? What do others think?
I think he is underrated. Read my book, In the Ring With Tommy Burns. The guy had skills, could move, fight inside and out, and had power and a solid chin. History has been hard on him because he lost to Jack Johnson.
I like his footwork, the way he gets quickly into range and then out again .He had some decent pop in that right hand too.
I'd never really heard anyone say Burns was a poor fighter or an awful champion until on this forum. There was always a question mark on his legitimacy because Jeffries was still recently retired and unbeaten as champion, but he was definitely a very good fighter. Yes, Moir gives a solid effort on film.
Compare burns common opponents with ketchells and ketchells blows him out of the water. Stanley Ketchell was a better fighter than Tommy Burns and the bigger puncher
Max Schmeling? Get out of here. Burns never in a million year would have competed with Joe Louis, let alone beat him
It's not that he was an awful fighter. He was a good fighter. I just think his title reign opposition was below average. A lot of title defenses but not against quality. I do give him a lot of credit for defending against the best in Jack Johnson Tommy had a lot of toughness
Ketchel, after he fought Langford ,said he thought Tommy Burns would be harder fight for him,and he picked Burns to beat Langford..
