Burns vs Fana for the WBO, IBF & RING/Lineal Super Feather title - FW make the fight

Turd-Sack would actually be a good challenger I think.

He's a strong wee unit who never stops coming forward, and Burns doesn't have the power or ring smarts of the three fighters who have beat him.

I think it would be a good test.

Can't be that great a pressure fighter if he lost to Steve Luevano.

 

Well, he can be outboxed.

But he generally has a go - not constant pressure, but he's usually on the front foot.

Would be a good few levels up from the Evensen's of this world in any case.

Linares was all hype. I definitely think Uchiyama would beat Burns though, but really, who was Salgado? Impressive win nonetheless, due to the way he won.

I agree Fana is a good fight; seemingly. Class above but has only really beaten an old Baloyi as of late, although, even now Burns would have to play it smart, never going to be able to have it easy like a fighter of Barreras class.

I'd make Fana favourite going in, as much as I like Ricky Burns.

I'm glad the Appleby fight is now a non starter as Ricky would have schooled him. Stevie Foster Jnr would be a great voluntary and make some cash.

Ricky Burns has set his sights on fellow world super-featherweight title holder Mzonke Fana after comfortably defending his WBO belt against Andreas Evensen.

Burns dominated against the durable Norwegian-based fighter to seal a unanimous points victory in his first defence.

The Scot admitted he had failed to sparkle despite putting Evensen down in the opening seconds of the fight at Braehead Arena in Glasgow.

But the 27-year-old hopes some time off following a demanding year can help prepare him for a tougher assignment.

And Burns has called on promoter Frank Warren and manager Alex Morrison to line up a fight against IBF champion Fana, the South African who is rated the best super-featherweight by Ring magazine.

"I'm after the Ring magazine title," Burns said. "I want to fight Fana, he is number one and I'm number two.

"There has been talk about it on the net about the two of us fighting for the Ring magazine award.

"It's the belt I've always wanted as well, so if we can get it happening, let's get it on.

"That's just the fight I would like to get, I will leave it up to my manager and promoter and I'm sure if they can get the fight to happen they will. I'm willing to fight anybody."

Burns was always in control against Colombian-born Evensen, who had won his previous four fights within the distance.

But, despite landing consistently, a knockout never looked likely to come as the previously unbeaten 24-year-old fought to the end before Burns was awarded victory by 118-109, 119-108 and 119-108.

The Coatbridge fighter's first defence was always likely to be something of an anti-climax following his spectacular triumph over clear favourite Roman Martinez in September, and Burns will now look to recharge his batteries before fighting again in the spring.

"I said before the Martinez fight, when I know I'm up against it, that's when I'm at my best," Burns said.

"Everyone thought this was going to be an easy fight for me and people were saying I was going to knock him out in three or four rounds.

"I tried to ignore that because, when you go in with that attitude, it ends up being your hardest fight.

"Andreas proved everybody wrong, he's a tough character and will go on to better things.

"He was quite awkward, coming in with his head down low and big wild hooks over the top. But to win every round and not be at your best, I'm still happy.

"At times it felt I was getting on top of him, other times I just felt I was a wee bit flat-footed. But I'm sure it's nothing a wee break is not going to cure."

Trainer Billy Nelson admitted there had been a "wee spark missing" from his fighter.

But he explained: "Ricky has been on the move a wee bit too long now, he needs a good solid four weeks off.

"The Martinez fight had been on and off in February, March, April, July and it ended up in September.

"So he was stop-start all the time, losing weight, putting it back on, and that takes a lot out of an athlete.

"Fair play to him, the performance against Martinez was exceptional by any stretch of the imagination.

"He was absolutely sparkling in the gym 10 days ago. I'm disappointed because what I see in the gym on a day-to-day basis is class."

While Burns is looking further afield for his next defence, there had been talk of an all-Scottish fight against former British featherweight champion Paul Appleby.

However, the South Queensferry fighter suffered a dispiriting defeat against Ghana's Joseph Laryea for the vacant WBO intercontinental super-featherweight title.

Although the African only won on a split decision, he was well in control after the initial two rounds as Appleby ended the contest bloodied and powerless.

Burns also played down the prospect of taking an opportunity to avenge an early-career defeat by Alex Arthur, the former holder of the WBO belt.

Arthur, now forging ahead as a lightweight, continued his attempts to force himself back into title contention with a victory over light-welterweight Jay Morris.

The 32-year-old won all eight rounds against late replacement Morris and twice had him on the canvas but was still some way short of his best.

"The extra weight helped him," the Edinburgh boxer said. "It felt weird fighting such a heavy guy. I was well out of my comfort zone but I really needed the rounds.

"There is no doubt I'm rusty but I'm placing my shots better and putting people down again.

"When I go back down that weight class they will feel the power a lot more."

Fair play to Burns, he's looking to establish himself as the top fighter rather than take easy routes. Let's hope Frank sees it the same way.
