Battle of the longshot underdogs who shocked the world, at their best (ie: Tokyo Douglas vs Johannesburg Rahman) 12 round contest, who wins?
Douglas. He was way more talented and skilled, he was just so lazy and inconsistent for most his career. People called Rahman the next Buster Douglas after Rahman lost the rematch, but I had tons of more respect for Rahman when he lost to Lewis than I did for Douglas after losing to Holyfield. At least Rahman trained hard and tried to win. He was just outclassed by a superior fighter.
True, but I thought Douglas was more gifted and skilled. People would talk about how Rahman was a talented underachiever, but I never saw what people were impressed with. He was a big strong guy with some nice right hand power and a terrific jab. His jab is the only thing that really impressed me. His speed was average, his balance was not good, his combos were not good, his chin was shaky, and so was his stamina.
Douglas was a far better fighter, and he took a better punch. He'd probably stop Rahman in the middle to late rounds, after jabbing circles around him.
The Buster Douglas that fought and destroyed Tyson would humiliate Rahman. Utterly no contest, like it would have been for Lennox Lewis if he had properly prepared for Rahman the first time.
I never was really impressed withRahman other than the 1st Lewis fight but other than the Tyson fight I was not impressed with Douglas, he was an underacheiver....close boring decision
difference between being good, and rarely putting your heart into it (Douglas) and being better than average and trying most of the time. (Hasim) On their best nights, Douglas wins.
Would have been a good fight while it lasted. I am a fan of both fighters. As big a fan of my man Rahman as I am, I would have to go with Douglas by ko in the later rounds.
