Nothing much dramatic or interesting takes place in this bout until, well, the first knock down not being called... And then the second... And the third... I didn't fully keep count however many times the referee here tries to pretend the wild Drayton was simply bowling Kaylor over with something but punches, even assisting him in getting to his feet at times. Wild. I've never actually seen reffing anything like this in the modern era except for some Coggi match ups that strain one's sanity or maybe a particular Ottke/Reid bout. Any which comparisons you want to draw, it's pretty bad... and quite frankly, all the referee succeeded in doing here was lining a helpless Kaylor up time and time again only to be mowed down, time and time again, resulting in a brutal, completely separated from reality knockout that surely can't do anything good for one's brain. I was at the fight Drayton gave him a thrashing.Drayton was a light middle too!The ref was Mike Jacobs ,he certainly had a bad night! Lawless and Duff ****ed up with this match. Speaking of bad nights, it was a bad night for Brit Boxers as Bruno was ko'd by Bonecrusher in the top of the bill!Ref Harry Gibbs
Kaylor looked really good early. He was easily winning the early rounds. I gave him five of the first six rounds. He was much quicker than Drayton. Drayton appeared slow in comparison. Kaylor didn't appear to land with much power, but was busy and showed good hand speed. Drayton did hurt him near the end of the third round, but it was a push that sent Kaylor down, and Drayton hit him in the back of the head as he was going down. The ref should have at least warned Drayton, there. But did not. The ref was correct in calling no knockdown there, I think. I did give Drayton the third round because he did hurt Kaylor. In the seventh, Buster finally got to Kaylor with a wild left hook that visably shook Kaylor. Buster followed up wildly. He then felled Kaylor. Kaylor got right up. I believe the ref, inexplicably, did not call that a knockdown, even though it was a clear knockdown and the mouthpiece was on the canvas. The British, at the time, did not finish the count after a fighter rose from a knockdown, so it would have only been a one or two count as Kaylor rose almost immediately. Kaylor is felled again, this time the ref counted it and began a count. Kaylor should have stayed down longer, but rose at about three. The action continued immediately, per the British rules at the time of not finishing the count once the fighter rises. Ferdie was ignorant of the rules. After the first (but really second) knockdown of the round, Ferdie says "I don't believe he didn't get an eight count." That would have been the case in the US, but not in Britain. Then, Kaylor goes down for the third time in the round and it is counted as a knockdown, but he gets right up and the action continues. Then, he goes down a fourth time and it is correctly ruled a slip. Even though it was no knockdown, Kaylor voluntarily takes a knee because he is still hurt. He gets up and the action resumes. Then, Drayton crushes him to the canvas with the fourth (but only third officially) knockdown of the round and the fight is stopped with Kaylor unable to rise. The referee only missed one knockdown in the whole fight. The British had an archaic rule where the eight count is not completed when a fighter rises from a knockdown. Ferdie Pacheco's ignorance of the rule made the referee out to be worse than he was. Kaylor looked like a good boxer, but his defense was medicore - he shouldn't have got caught with the first haymaker that hurt him in the 7th round and from which he never recovered. His chin looked medicore, as well.
This is downright stupid!!! Don´t you know that there was no mandatory 8 count in Britain at that time? When a man rose after being knocked down the fight was on! Not long ago another idiot tried to tell that Ali (Clay) should have had an 8 count even after the bell against Henry Cooper. Oh my god.
I should change my thread title to "obscure stupid old boxing rule still implemented by the British into the 80's nearly gets their man killed".
I really envy you some (most) of the time, mcvey! I can't imagine being able to be so lucky as to attend, first hand, so many meaningful and exciting bouts. You're a lucky man!
They should have just let Drayton stand/hover right over Kaylor, like Dempsey used to do. I mean, **** the 8 count, right?
