Mad first round of this fight...Mathis was very lucky not to get disqualified, he shoved the ref around like a rag doll. Mathis was an alright heavyweight i think...reading joe fraziers book, joe didnt rate him as much, although he gave joe no easy time in their fight....joe said he was very likeable but his heart wasnt in boxing...and he virtually gave up his chance to box in the olympics and thats how joe got in anyhoo...this crazy first round against chuvalo... Buster put a whuppin on George pretty much throughout..one of his best showings, but he proved to be a bit of a bully..the crowd sided with Chuvalo. Interestingly, Mathis's next fight was with Jerry Quarry, and Quarry did the same thing to Mathis...really laid it on him for one of Quarry's best performances...according to Nat Fliescher, "Quarry took Buster apart"...
just looking at this video again...at 4.40 you can almost lipread what the ref is saying....."don't you ever do that again....i'm the boss" or something like that
