A 70's Tony Tubbs in a way...overweight, but with surprising skills and handspeed considering his bulk. It's been said here that he was a good fighter just not able to take it up one more notch, and that for me sums Mathis up. I like watching him personally. Good fighter. He put on a very good fight against Chuvalo, which proved his ability. He was better than his son. Neither were punchers, but Mathis snr did have some pop whereas his son virtually had no power at all for a heavyweight, and he was also some three inches shorter than his dad. A short heavyweight with no power doesn't have a long-term future in this sport, although to be fair he did do fairly well for himself.
