    I've been watching a bit of Bruce Seldon lately - in particular his world title win (and perhaps his career meridian) over the faded but still serviceable and much larger Tony Tucker. You know something? Seldon was a good boxer. Nice skills. I like how he placed his punches. He had a good, quick and busy jab. He had a great sense of range wasn't the least bit awed or intimidated by those who had substantial size on him (even Bowe). He kept himself in shape. He mixed varying defensive techniques with fair proficiency, and he hardly ever ran.

    Of course, that one Achilleus' heel was always going to hold him back from a long title reign or a bevy of elite wins in just about any era. If any hard hitting heavyweight from history were to catch him just once, that would effectively be checkmate. It seems a shame and a bit of a waste, really.

    Who are some other star-crossed pugs who had more or less otherwise complete enough tool kits to make it big, but were always going to be marked for doom by their easily depressible buttons?

    Ace Hudkins who Goldstein dropped in the first round,on his back, but
    Hudkins got up and in the next round kod Goldstein,and exposed his "glass" chin, and Goldstein was kod many times after, soon retired, and became a famous referee...

    Tony Mundine had it all. Speed,skills and power but his chin (or maybe it was his fighting spirit) let him down on numerous occasions to lesser talented fighters.

    Check out this great footage (sorry about the dreadful audio) of his clash with Bad Bennie Briscoe and you'll pretty much see a microcosm of his many strengths and his one glaring weakness.

    He's comfortably outpointing Bennie until he gets trapped on the ropes,caught and counted out (although it looks like he could've continued).

    If you could've transplanted Briscoe's chin and heart onto Mundine then you would've had the world middleweight champion Monzon or no Monzon imo.

    You think Morrison was a more or less complete package, ignoring his chin? I always regard him as a bit of a one trick pony with that thunderous left hook. He wasn't devoid of skill, but wasn't too far ahead of average IMO (whereas Seldon was good enough that you could say his jaw was really the only thing holding him back). Mental acumen and stamina also bring down his "overall" score.

    Hide and especially Norton are good shouts, though.

    Carl Williams is a guy that likely wins a world title at some point. He would not defend it long, but his vulnerable whiskers were available because he held both hands low. He brought them back low after punching. But the guy was a good boxer but just had minimal defense to rely on & held that chin up.

    how would his career have panned out if he had a better chin?

    wins over leonard, duran, benitez and possibly outboxing hagler in a thriller. add that to his triumphs, removing the barkley loss in the first fight and changing it to a 6th TKO win, and he has a potential top 10 all time resume

    I agree mundine looks like the real deal here - he has the relaxed demeanor of a man confident of his tools. Fast, elusive and very sharp. Shame he didn't have the other stuff...
