Patterson was a light-hwavyweight fighting as a heavyweight. I dont think his chin was the problem:nono

"The Doctor Of Styles", Tim Littles :happy:bbb:!::dead:-(.

Fantastic talent, but his chin failed him miserably in his two title shots against Liles and Toney. A horrible curse.

You're right, Patterson's problem wasn't his chin, it was himself.

Let me ask folks this one. Was Lennox Lewis hit any harder in his two ("gee, I'm in a ***** street puddle and I can't get up") KO losses than Floyd was in his two Sonny scraps (fights in which Liston said he felt the force of his blows deep into his shoulders and back) in which Floyd was RISING in defeat?

I'm sorry, I've just grown tired of everyone saying Patterson would have been quickly blown out by the deep 70's HW talent and the big 80's guys and the 90's guys...etc...
Not to mention what IMO is completely unfair in judging fighters from different eras.
    An example:
Patterson in 2000 would have been a greased lighting, bulked up 205 pound heat seeking missle.
The Klit bros. in 1950 would have been 'gangly' 215-225 pounders with, granted, stiff punches but with far less imposedness (sp.?)....
    My rather weak $0.02

The great Lorenzo Zanon...how may times...after a ko loss in a fight that he was winning, would mutter to himself.."whatza matta witta my chin????"

Interesting take on size Era vs Era.. I'd love to see this "greased lightning" 205 pound Patterson today, his left hook would probably ice quite a few contenders and maybe even the champions!!

Seldon was a hot prospect. Ring Magazine did a special of the up and coming heavyweights of the 1990's which included Bowe, Lewis, Morrison, Seldon, and Mercer.

Thier panel felt Seldon was the 2nd best of the bunch.

    Bowe
    Seldon
    Morrison
    Lewis
    Mercer

That's how Ring Magazine saw it.

Seldon was fast with a jab and some power. Enough power to have Oliver Mcall in serious trouble. See round 9 of their excellent fight if you dare.

    Seldon's problem was two-fold.

    1 ) He had a poor chin
2 ) His mental confidence was equally poor

    He was decent

But he lacked more than just a good chin

He also had questionable stamina much of the time.

Also, He possesed only average defense.

I would list a guy like Roger Mayweather among the guys who as very well rounded except for a mediocre chin. He was better all around than Seldon. Also, Thomas Hearns.

Great observations! I agree with all that you said. Morrison's weakness was his lack of dedication and partying. His chin wasn't bad at all, witness the dozens of punches he withstood vs Mercer.

Edit: Most of the guys being listed in this thread became champions and therefore "made it big" even with their suspect chins. Carl Williams is probably the most talented of the rest, imo.

Agreed Carl was a beast, he couldn't block the left hook to save his life see the knock out loss to Weaver, getting caught while he was pummeling Weaver with the hook. Jesse Ferguson dropped him with the hook as did Tyson and Tillis and Morrison.. The right could get him too see his upset loss to Jerry "the slice man" Jones where he was down early. Carl's chin was interesting if you hurt and dropped him it was always pretty much early. It's as if after he got into the fight a bit his chin improved. He never was done any favors either possibly should've got the call vs Holmes, I remember him being robbed in a fight where he outboxed and hurt Tim Witherspoon late in a fight only to be on the wrong side of another questionable decision. I remember he pummeled the **** out of a good young motivated Bert Cooper. He also Dominated Trevor Berbick when Berbick was still very good.. The Tyson fight always bothered me, I'm 100% sure he could've continued now I'm not sure it would've mattered but I'd still wish it'd have gone on. Poor Carl next time say "YES IM OK"!!!! When Randy Neuman asked him if he was ok Carl looked dazed and only a second later was losing his mind, upset at the stoppage weird stuff, maybe Carl really was gone and then immediately back.. Who knows.. Carl was never one to stay quiet and not ***** so he spoke his mind. It's criminal really that Carl never won a title but so many lesser fighters have, but that's the nature of the game..

Errol Christie.a brilliant boxer with a big future the sky was the limit so they said . Hagler was on his hit list for the future.but then running low on opponents he took on a LHW from Belgium and got flattend.it was all down hill after that.
