I had it by a smaller margin but Degale won clearly. That said, people saying Degale would beat Froch are seriously in need of a reality check. There is no way Degale has enough to hold Carl at bay for 12 rounds. He is certainly quicker and slicker, but he does not have the defensive capability to nullify Froch for a full 12 rounds. This fight with Bute showed some shockingly poor lapses from Degale in backing off to the corner and ropes (something he seems to do alot). He seems to have stamina issues or is very laid back about pressing his advantage in a fight to the extent of throwing away close rounds.
He might do. DeGale is fast, pretty elusive and seems to have a solid chin. Quite a few fighters have managed to go 12 rounds or very nearly go 12 rounds with Froch. He's far from guaranteed to beat Froch but it wouldn't be all that surprising if he did imo.
People forget how confused Froch looks when he has someone with speed in front of him. He also tends to square up more and swing wildly. I belive he could outpunch himself.
Bute was waiting for the perfect punch/counter... he should've just pressed harder by attacking. In a rematch, I think Bute would do much better and most likely win!
Degale often cuts and marks up, that doesnt really mean a great deal. Look how De La Hoya didnt look marked up at all and how Mayweather had a swollen eye after they had changed for the post fight talks
I didn't score the fight because I was absolutely exhausted and very blurry-eyed when I watched it (it didn't start until something like 5:30am over here), but it was a fiercely competitive very high skill affair all the way through and most of the rounds were not won by a big margin at all. Bute should've tried to secure a shot against one of the other champs at 168 before tangling with DeGale, who is the best in the division IMO. Even though he's past his best, he's still a quality operator and I'd favour him against all of the other world champions at the weight. He's been very inactive and was 2-2 in his last 4 fights, and those 2 loses were real confidence shattering loses, and I think it would've been much wiser of him if he took on one of the lesser champions instead of diving straight in against the best in the division. Bute is a warrior though. No diva **** with him. He had no qualms about heading over into the lion's den of Oakland to fight Ward, or Nottingham for Froch, taking his belt ala DeGale to his opponent's backyard and even taking a pay cut to do it. Don't forget that he took on Pascal in his first real fight up at LHW against world class opposition too. Pascal had been up at 175 for 8 fights and 4.5 years when Bute fought him. Technically Bute fought at LHW in his previous outing against Grachev but he was only 169 and Grachev was a quarter of a pound less.
The judges scored 5 rounds unanimously. The majority of the rounds were than split between professionnal judges. So the fight was close.
