Technically tho, after his fight in June. Three of Pavlik's last 4 opponents will read as follow. Lockett, Rubio and Mora. Not exactly that impressive for the middleweight champion of the world.
Lockett--mandatory; also set up to help along a Calzaghe fight, which was the logical next fight due to Enzo. Didn't happen; Calzaghe ran. Rubio--Mandatory; also was a fight coming off the Hopkins fight. Also was a "thank-you" to hometown fans. Mora--Hopefully a showcase for the AA fight rumored to be coming in November. Mora also the only name opponent available for the optional defense. AA supposed to fight on this undercard. What is so difficult to understand with this? Pavlik fought 2 bs mandatories; it happens. Quit shitting on the guy and trying to claim he won't fight anyone.
And if the Spina fight goes along, Bute's record for 3/4 will read Zuniga, Spina, Joppy. Leaving that one fighter out makes something of a difference, no?
Fair enough, but it's close. Zuniga had peaked quite a bit earlier and a couple weight classes ago. But the point stands that not every fight can be a winner, and you can't really blame Pavlik for the Lockett fight for 2 reasons: mando and attempt to set up the Calzaghe fight, which Calzaghe ducked rendering the Lockett fight useless and you can't blame Pavlik for the Rubio fight for 3 more reasons: Mandatory, hometown "thank-you" fight for fans (although the tickets were expensive enough...) and also tune up after ass whipping. Hell, Even the Mora fight can be excused for the following: Stay busy fight Showcase for AA fight Mora about the only guy available with any sort of name
A giant ****ing bummer, of course. But again, if it was made as a showcase for Pavlik prior to the AA fight and the AA fight fell through (knock wood), then it's tough to point blame at Pavlik, cause he was trying to set up the big fight.
His point was that it's not any better than Lockett-Rubio-Mora. And I agree. Probably a bit worse even. This is really disappointing if he ends up fighting Spina, but sometimes these things happen. It doesn't seem to be for lack of trying to get a better opponent. Also, pretty much every source other than the one owned by Green's manager (including ESPN, which frankly is a lot more reputable than Fightnews) is saying that Green priced himself out of the fight. If that's true, then fine, but don't make it seem like Bute is ducking him. Green isn't a big attraction and he doesn't have much leverage to get a big fight. If he was offered $75k or so, he should have taken it; that way, he gets a decent payday (more than he's making otherwise), gets some more major network TV time, and has a chance to win a belt. If he wins a belt, he'll have leverage and he'll be able to get the big money fights he wants. But whining about how nobody will fight him and pricing himself out of 4 or 5 fights with big names isn't going to get him there.
