He controlled every minute of every round. Unlike Froch he held the centre of the ring and just picked Johnson apart. I was extremly impressed last night, some people said Johnson looked done, but I disagree, Bute was just to good. In the Froch fight Carl made him look decent because Johnson was pressing the action in there fight and did give him problems at times. I think Ward and Bute both beat Froch handily, I hate to say it aswell. :bart
I agree completely regarding the fight. That Johnson was no different than the same Glen from the last few years, he was handled with consumate ease. No doubt there will be many people who credited Froch that will discredit Bute but whatever.
I switched over to McEwan about 2/3 of the way through and from what I saw he controlled Johnson without even getting out of 3rd gear. He may not have the record of the likes of Froch, Kessler and Ward (though not far behind after last night) he is definitely up there in terms of talent. He's a force to be reckoned with. Very skillful, athletic, elusive, awkward, has power in both hands, good range of punches (uppercut is amazing). Can't wait till he faces Froch/Kessler/Ward/Dirrell.
Bute would be a horrible fight stylistically for Ward and it probably would be a stinker. I could see Ward been too tentative to throw because of Bute's counter punching ability. Bute is so clever, he purposely shows you the body to draw you in and he disguises what he is going to do with his left and he is deadly accurate with it up close because he doesn't need that much space to use it. Ward would have trouble tying him up too i think. Bute has very subtle and quick foot movement and he never lets you smother him, always seems to be dictating range. Ward is world class and he is capable i think of beating Bute if he keeps it long but ive yet to see him box to a disciplined gameplan for the full 12. Trying to impress too much could be his downfall against Bute. Froch could arguably be more dangerous against Bute because of his balls to the wall mentality, greater chin, and Froch's actual similar stance could cause Bute problems too.
I want to see him in the trenches before I'm sold. He has the skills but does he have the grit and the heart?
Glencoffe was a stylistic dream for Bute. He was always going to win a wide points decision. Put Bute in against Froch, great fight. :rasta
I hope bute fights the winner of the super six as soon as possible after its finished, either that or kessler.
I thought you could have given Johnson a draw against Froch. For Bute to outpoint him so clearly is impressive.
In all fairness Jpab most of the abuse bute gets on this forum is because of his record and his nuthuggers. Ive always said I will pick other SMWs to beat him because he hasnt fought anyone on their level so i have no evidence to suggest he would. Last night is a differnet story but come on its johnson who gets so overrated on this forum because hes a "have gloves will travel" fighter.
I like Bute, he is one of my favourite active fighters, but lets not get carried away too much. Bute beat an old G Johnson coming off a loss who at SMW was never more than a tough journeyman/gatekeeper. Johnson was 0-5 in his last 5 world title attempts. Just a note on G Johnsons SMW career - In 14 SMW fights Johnson has lost 8 of them. Johnson has lost at SMW to - M Sosa who had 5 losses and 2 draws, and lost his next 2 fights after beating Johnson Kiwanuka who had 3 losses and 2 draws, had lost his last 2 fights coming into his fight with Johnson and his fight after Johnson Ottke 16-0 IBF champ who in fairness was an outstanding SMW boxer Vanderpool 27-1 who lost his next fight, but in fairness that was at MW to Hopkins and Vanderpool had a good run after Branco 38-4-2 who was a world class SMW and became WBA LHW champ Sheika who was 19-1 and lost his next fight, though in fairness that was to Calzaghe. Froch 27-1 WBC champ Bute 29-0 IBF champ The SMWs that Johnson has managed to beat Campas 3-20-4 coming off of only 2 losses and won his next fight Watson 24-16-1, Johnson was his last fight Renteria 9-23-5 coming in, whos last 10 fight record before facing Johnson was 0-8-2 Zimmerman 15-2-0 coming in, who had lost his previous fight and the one after A Green 29-2-0 coming in and Johnsons biggest SMW victory Its not impressive now is it. Please spare me the robbery talk. If any rated SMW losses to Johnson it wont look good on their resume A Green 29-2-0 coming in and Johnsons biggest SMW victory To think beating Green was all Johnson had to do to become a Ring rated SMW in todays ratings. Shows that the division isnt as strong as it once was. Now I think Bute would beat Ward also, but at this time I would question whether any of the current crop would have beaten many of the previous generations SMWs, like Eubank, Benn, Collins, Ottke etc. No none of them would have beaten Calzaghe but at this time many of them are no further on than the likes of Reid, Woodhall, Beyer etc. I do think Bute can call himself the #1 SMW of now though
Yep, clearly getting the better of Woods in a series, arguably beating Dawson and fighting at the top level over 3 weights whilst only being stopped once (on his feet Vs one of the greats), that Glencoffe is well overrated :deal
