I agree! Had the KD happened 10 seconds earlier, Bute'd have been KOed by the first punch Andrade would have thrown. Andrade was too late in giving it the final push. Unlucky? Yeah, but he wasn't robbed. Bute won fair and square.
nice replies to my post guys. but as a retired fighter it pains me to see someone in bute's position and i'd be happier if a ref waves it off when a fighter is clearly in trouble. like cotto and (perhaps) gatti, the higher profile fighter can get a 'longer lifeline' in moments like these..but its still not nice to see at the time even if the end result is a cracking fight.
Yeah, but if you had worked your butt off to win a world title, like Bute has, you'd have understood why he was really glad to have not been stopped prematurely at the cost of taking a couple more punches, which in the end did him no harm. The guy didn't even have to see the doctor at the end, or spend the night in the hospital. He walked back to his corner, gingerly. He recovered within a minute completely, gave a very coherent interview, went to the press conference, etc.. He was exhausted more than hurt, at the end. It was because he had worked so hard for the belt and because the crowd had supported him so generously throughout his career that he found the strength to beat the count. Every champ fights tooth and nail to keep his title, because they're very hard to win. Bute wasn't really in that much trouble - he was mostly exhausted, not hurt. The referee called it right. That's why he gets to referee world title fights and not amateur fights involving 10 year olds....etc.
You can't say that there was not a long count, you can't say that the ref could and probably should have stopped it right there, waved it off so what is there fair and square about it? Putting us thinking about your "extra" 30 seconds on the clock and about the stoicism of Bute ( without considering the non-rewarded effort from Andrade) is clearly manipulating the issue. Bute was winning the fight fair and square up until then but **** happens in this game, ask Meldrick Taylor and Lou Duva about it.
people work their butt off in boxing daily just to win their next fight. please dont start a post with someone who has fought - and succeeded - with "yeah, but if you had worked your butt off" - its condescending.
The fight was over the second Bute raised himself with his hands clear of the floor. It's in the rules. That's when the fight should have been stopped by the timekeeper's bell. There shouldn't even have been a count past that point. It was irrelevant. The fight was over. Bute had beaten the count by getting up 8 seconds after he was knocked down. He was knocked down 2 seconds before the end of the round. The rule says you cannot be saved by the bell; you need to beat the count by getting up before the 10 count. Bute got up withing 8 seconds. Fight was over at that point. The long count only happened because the timekeeper failed to ring the bell, signallin the end of the fight. Long count was long because Andrade came out of his corner as far as the centre of the ring, agains the rules. Rules say the ref needs to stop counting, send him back and restart the count only when he is back in his corner: Watch Andade out of the corner at 1: 23 [yt]66CO0lksoEo&feature=related[/yt] He denied it, of course, but look: it's there on video, in the bottom right hand corner!
Nobody is taking away Andrade's efforts. He did exactly what he needed to do to win the fight. Just a tad bit too late. I think he deserves a rematch, but if I were Bute, I wouldnt give it to him. Bute won. He beat that count. Sure, the ref couldve stopped the fight before the KD. That will always be debatable. But he didnt stop it. Only he could decide what was right at the time. You cant argue with the decision. I would have accepted it either way. Bute was hurt and looked like he was out. But he was able to move around and stay on his feet until the final punch. If Bute didnt go down, I think after the punch the ref would have had to stop the fight. But he went down and was able to get up before the bell. Very lucky for Bute that the timing was perfect. But, as unlucky as it was for Andradre, you cant change the rules..... Bute UD
I apologise for sounding condescending; I didn't mean to be. My point was that the sacrificed these guys make to get where they are are so great that it's worth it to them to be allowed to take punishment to remain at the position they had worked so bloody hard to reach. It's like anything in life - something you've really given everything to gain is very precious to you, and you don't want to have it taken away from you without a fight, just because someone who doesn't understand how much it means to you wants you to not overstretch yourself too much in protecting it. If you've been there and done that, you will know precisely what I mean!:good
yea i didnt watch the fight live however i read all the articles early the next morning. I was outraged, I believe one article stated that there was 12 seconds reamining in the fight after he got off the canvas, only to have the ref drag out the remaining time. Soon thereafter a poster, posted a link to the video and it showed the knockdown with 2 seconds remaining in the fight. At first i thought it was an error and replayed it expecting to see all the controversy. However it was clear that he beat the count, and the fight was over. I'm not sure where all the controversy stemmed from, perhaps those writing the articles were ringside and therefore did not have a the round clock to see and only went on the seconds between him standing up and the bell, or perhaps because they felt that the fight should have been stopped because Bute would not be able to continue regardless of the time left in the round. At any rate he quickly beat the count, and the fight was over. End of story, to the scorecards, and rightfully so.
Man, you are pretty ****ing stupid. "23 seconds to recover from being knocked out." That don't have any logic at all. There was only a few seconds ( about 3 or 4 seconds) left in the fight when Bute was knocked down. Bute got up at the count of 8 and the fight was over- time ran out. End of fight! I don't care how slow the ref counted, anyone can count for themselves and see that Bute was obviously up before 10. HTF did the ref give Bute 23 seconds to recover, when there is only 3 seconds left in the fight? That is just ****ing stupid.
