Any boxer's power is good against a stationary target. In this fight, Bute showed he lacks the ability to penetrate an old man's defense and apply that power in a meaningful way. Hopkins KO'ed Johnson some 15 years ago, yet a 42 yo version goes the distance against a supposedly prime fighter. I'm not convinced of Bute's status. He seems very one dimensional, slow, and mechanical to me.
I like Bute, he is one of my favourite active fighters, but This content is protected away too much. Bute beat an old G Johnson coming off a loss who at SMW was never more than a tough journeyman/gatekeeper. Johnson was 0-5 in his last 5 world title attempts. Just a note on G Johnsons SMW career - In 14 SMW fights Johnson has lost 8 of them. Johnson has lost at SMW to - M Sosa who had 5 losses and 2 draws, and lost his next 2 fights after beating Johnson Kiwanuka who had 3 losses and 2 draws, had lost his last 2 fights coming into his fight with Johnson and his fight after Johnson Ottke 16-0 IBF champ who in fairness was an outstanding SMW boxer Vanderpool 27-1 who lost his next fight, but in fairness that was at MW to Hopkins and Vanderpool had a good run after Branco 38-4-2 who was a world class SMW and became WBA LHW champ Sheika who was 19-1 and lost his next fight, though in fairness that was to Calzaghe. Froch 27-1 WBC champ Bute 29-0 IBF champ The SMWs that Johnson has managed to beat Campas 3-20-4 coming off of only 2 losses and won his next fight Watson 24-16-1, Johnson was his last fight Renteria 9-23-5 coming in, whos last 10 fight record before facing Johnson was 0-8-2 Zimmerman 15-2-0 coming in, who had lost his previous fight and the one after A Green 29-2-0 coming in and Johnsons biggest SMW victory Its not impressive now is it. Please spare me the robbery talk. If any rated SMW losses to Johnson it wont look good on their resume A Green 29-2-0 coming in and Johnsons biggest SMW victory To think beating Green was all Johnson had to do to become a Ring rated SMW in todays ratings. Shows that the division isnt as strong as it once was. Now I think Bute would beat Ward also, but at this time I would question whether any of the current crop would have beaten many of the previous generations SMWs, like Eubank, Benn, Collins, Ottke etc. No none of them would have beaten Calzaghe but at this time many of them are no further on than the likes of Reid, Woodhall, Beyer etc. I do think This content is protected
Yes we do. I think Ward beats him but Bute's power is real, no doubt about that. Did Bute respect Magee's or Brinkley's power? They still lasted 10 and 9 rds with him... Yes you are. Bute beat Johnson in a more dominating fashion. Froch may have landed more clean punches but that's because Johnson opened up a lot more and Froch got hit a lot too. Bute was in complete control from start to finish except for a round or two.
True Bute made a great comment saying if he avoided the jab of Johnson he would avoid the following right hand which glenn throws down to a tee. I give credit to Bute's movement and execution of his game plan but the right hand of Johnson not landing had more to do with his lack of taking a risk more so than Bute nullifying it. Bute was egging Johnson on to open up but Glenn wanted no part of it
I just want to add that was Bute gameplan and not is ring IQ that made it this way. Bute's trainer Stéphane Larouche is really good to find weaknest and i do gameplans
im not trying to take anything away from bute, it just seemed that won the rounds more decisively = more dominating
We'd like to think his power is good, but truth is, he was unable to KO/TKO or even badly hurt an obviously weakened and old Glen Johnson. Please don't say he held back. Bute needed to finish this fight strong to shore up his ever growing lack public (outside of Canada) of credibility. :yep
Froch won his rounds more clearly but Bute won almost every round. He didn't hold back, Johnson did. Bute's offense is merely the result of his opponent's offense. If you don't come straight ahead and attack him he's gonna jab you and try to lure you in and counter you. If you stay on the outside and box, he's not gonna be able to blast you out or it will happen in the late rounds. You can doubt his effectiveness against moving targets but you can't doubt that his power is good. Dude dropped Andraded with a headshot and a bodyshot and kept him down, he's working with some serious power.
he was talking about hand speed not running i agree with you! but i would prefer have Bute speed-power combination then Direll speed-no power combination
