Don't take any notice of the others, Butterbean is an all time great. He had a magnificent physique, sometimes coming into the ring as slim as 280lbs. He floated around the ring with effortless grace and had KO power in either hand. Also there is his quality of opposition, sometimes he even fought men with wins on their record. The only reason he ever lost was because he was a kind man and didn't hit as hard as he could for fear of killing people. In my opinion he is the greatest there ever was and all of the other fighters you mentioned aren't in his class. Mike Tyson: Butterbean KO1. Floyd Patterson: Butterbean KO1. Joe Louis: Butterbean KO1. David Tua: Butterbean KO1. Joe Frazier: Butterbean TKO1.
I say straight up, he should be in the IBHOF, he made the sport a decent bit of money in the 90s, and deserves the kudos for that. But no, he is clearly not an all time great.
Butterbean would have given Ali a real hard time. Dancing around with your hands at your sides is an invitation for disaster when facing Butterbean.
ESB classic has had a huge push towards the "Size does matter" philosophy...I have no argument to refute this. Size does matter and thus, Butterbean is right there with the greatest!
atsch Duran, JMM and Bean. Don't trust anything MAG says regarding these legends of our sport. When you compare their performances against common opponents like Holmes, it makes an extraordinarily powerful case against Ali in a H2H between the two.

Butterbean knocked down a prime larry holmes. After the fight Larry Holmes said Bean hit harder than Shavers.
You're kidding right?? The guy had 90 fights and only 2 of those were scheduled for more than his normal 4 round affair. He had one 8 and one 10 rounder in all that time. The only name on his extensive record with ANY recognition is Larry Holmes and he was almost 52 when he fought Esch and Larry still won a decision over the guy. I look at his career in the ring as more a side-show, very entertaining, but a side-show all the same.
Yeah hes right up there with louis dempsey an ali. In all seriousness hes a tough sob that would ring a lot of bells in a bar room brawl
