the part about Butterbean beating him worse is not that crazy..but when you go on to say that the Butterbean who beat McNeely would beat the Tyson who beat McNeely....you have entered LA LA land.
BOTTOMLINE McNeely had signed with Don King, he was set to be Oliver McCall's 1st defense of his WBC belt, but the WBC nixed it because McNeely was ranked 12th at the time and they demanded someone in the top ten. McCall fought Larry Holmes and McNeely got Tyson instead. McNeely acknowledges that the fight should have been stopped and that he was "out on his feet ". Shortly after Tyson he got picked up on a DUI, he then spiraled out of control, His drug use esclated, he often would wake in crackhouses taking fights on short notice. He continued to fight facing opponents with a combined record of 85 - 124 until he knocked out by Brian Neilson in the 3rd round. His next fight was againt Esch aka Butterbean. So, the fact that NcNeely lasted an extra 90 seconds with Tyson than a tough man contest winner says more about him and where he was at then his opponents.
I was on an Amtrak train to Denver in Sept. 1996 and I swear I saw McNeeley. He was drinking the whole time I saw him. It had to be him. Scanning his boxrec stats, he had a fight in Colorado around that time.
Yes, you are correct Sir. I got that twisted, possibly while trying to rationalize the logic of the premise of this thread. Assuming that Butterbean would beaten Tyson on his knockout of an actively using, meth addicted Peter McNeely.
Tyson, koed him in under a minute. Knocked him dowm in the first 5 seconds. Also, said the butterbean stoppage was a poor stoppage.
McNeeley was a full blown drug addict by the time he fought Butterbean. And he wasn't much to begin with.
Beating McNeely isn't saying much, but I like Butterbean he went 10 rounds with Larry Holmes and even floored the legend, even though the punch landed on the shoulder, but it looked good so I'm giving him the credit.
Butterbean was a sideshow. Mcneely was mostly smoke and mirrors. Both would lose to decent debut guys.
