Jimmy Thunder would murder him in about a minute. One guy was a real, honest professional fighter. Butterbean was a side show clown.
Thunder was able get wins against past prime versions of Tubbs,Witherspoon and Berbick. Butterbean would not be able to compete with those guys even though they were past their prime. Thunder by KO 1
I went with Thunder. But, the more I think about it, I am not so sure. Anyone who could be stopped by the feather-fisted Chris Byrd has a chance of losing to Butterbean (or any hard puncher, for that matter). But, after 4 rounds Butterbean would be too exhausted to mount any offense.
I'm pretty sure Byrd would have stopped Butterbean as well. I would bet Melvin Foster and Crawford Grimsley would probably beat Butterbean too.
There is one huge difference between Chris Byrd and Butterbean and it is even bigger than the weight difference. Chris Byrd started boxing when he started walking and dedicated himself to his craft, developed and proved his skill and ability against other dedicated boxers at every level. There is no shame in losing to that man because, for his time, he was very skillful. Butterbean was a tub of lard and a gimmick and he engaged in about 6, maybe, legitimate fights in his career. He is the actual embodiment of what many perceive Primo Carnera to have been. The only way he would beat Jimmy Thunder is if the referee was distracted and Bean's manager hit Thunder with a chair. Butterbean has zero place in any serious discussion about legitimate boxing. One of the great injustices of our time is that when Ricardo Lopez and the obese buffoon were fighting on the same shows Butterbean was paid more and got higher billing. That, right there, should explain why "hard core" boxing fans are among the biggest dummies on the planet.
This must be one of his "legit" fights? Mitch Rose, 1-6-1, beat undefeated Butterbean like a drum and stopped him in two rounds. Maybe Butterbean's management thought he could legitimately beat Rose? He didn't come close. This content is protected
At the time there was an article about that in one of the magazines. Bean's matchmaker got fired over that, for letting him fight Rose. Rose had been a very good amateur in and around New York but drugs and jail derailed him. The matchmaker figured he would be easy, but didn't know that Rose was clean and in pretty good shape and prepared to take the fight seriously.
Eric 'Mantequilla' Esch would outslick and outpunch Thunder. KO4 in an absolute belly flopper of a fight.
Found this article, Mitch Rose died on February 12 of this year. In addition to beating Butterbean, he got in a street scuffle with Mike Tyson and sued him for injuries received, and then sued Jay-Z for 88M for stealing "his flow." He also wrote a book titled, "Mike Tyson Tried to Kill My Daddy." He ended his career at 2-11-1 according to the article, but fought some "names." The article also mentioned that Rose, with only 8 amateur fights, made it to the finals of the NYGG, but it didn't mention whether it was at Novice or Open. https://nyfights.com/worldwide/rest-in-peace-mitchell-rose/
His story is a bit different than the magazine article told it. It sounds like he had a good ride and it is a shame he died so young. May he rest in peace.
Byrd put on a clinic that fight and beast him down over many rounds .. fatigue played a part with superb combination punching
