    OK. In 'Scenes 'Fighting words' segment the author David Greisman says that his fellow boxing journalists, writers and pundits have selected the following fighters as Boxing Writers Association of America 2013 fighter of the year.

    FMJ
    Krusher

    To which list Adonis Stevenson may be added (but none of the present candidates would be removed if he was)

    Poll is provided and the purpose of this thread is to give an opportunity to air any thoughts or speculations on the subject.

    EDIT: I've edited for greater clarity

    EDIT: whilst I have mentioned it later in the thread, in has now (thurs) been clarified that Stevenson is also nominated.

    Stevenson for me. Went up in weight to KO the lineal LHW champ. Fought four times in the year, avenging his only loss, beating his mandatory and defeating a former titlist, all by KO. Just edges Floyd for me. Bradley is third, his fights were too close IMO to win him FOTY. Wouldn´t have a problem with any of these three winning.

    Stevenson had the best year in terms of numbers and accomplishments. Kovalev matches the numbers, but the lineal championship and two defenses over Top 10 opponents trumps the WBO strap and one defence.

    As an aside Yaegashi warrants mention, too. 4-0, 2 lineal flyweight title, two defences including one over the number one contender in the division is pretty damned good.

    Has to be Stevenson.

    He beat the Lineal and Number 1 Light Heavyweight champion Chad Dawson by 1st rd KO, he also beat a recent Light Heavyweight Champion Tavouris Cloud by KO and on top of that he beat his Mandatory challenger Tony Bellew by KO and revenged his one loss to Darnell Boone by KO too.

    The fact he beat them all by KO and never lost a round of boxing in 2013 should mean he is the FOTY.

    OK - I'm torn between Kovalev and Stevenson, both are 2013 breakouts.

    I finally went with Kovalev based on the Nov 30th results (I did a poll prior to the 30/11 fights seeing whether Bellew or Sillakh would be a tougher fight and bigger win).

    Stevenson has the bigger single win of the 2 in Dawson, but he was coming off a long layoff and a bad loss. Cloud also was coming off a loss (indeed many would say 2 losses - the first to Campillo, who Kovalev destroyed). White was a fringe top 10 LHW - similar to Bellew and was also dispatched with stunning ease by Kovalev. Boone is the singular (and shared) opponent who couldn't be considered of at least contender status and he was coming off a run of losses.

    In short, it's a kinda toss up, but in terms of overall resume for 2013 and the ease with which he won his fights, I've put Kovalev just a nose ahead, although I can quite easily see the argument that Stevensons capture of the lineal title makes him the better candidate.

    FWIW I'm very surprised that Kovalev was nominated above Adonis (as things stand Stevenson may not even be in the running - final decision on Friday I think).

    For me though the activity and achievements of both with 4 stoppages inc. a title win puts them both at the front of the queue.

    He beat Hopkins though so yes he was Lineal champion and his loss to Ward was at 168lbs not 175lbs.

    Kovalev is not fighter of the year, sorry. Sillakh and White were not top 10 fighters. Campillo was lower end top 10. Cleverly was a top 5 titlist.

    Stevenson has a better claim than Kovalev does.

    Garcia and Bradley may have better years than both despite only 2 fights each, due to the high significance of them.

    But then when you consider that the answer becomes clear. It's Mayweather's year. Guerrero, top 5 WW and fight claims vacant WW lineage. Alvarez #1 lineal/unifed JMW champion... Becomes first lineal champion in two divisions with fights in both divisions in the year since............... it's been a minute.

    I got Kovalev. I rate Nathan Cleverly and to see someone utterly destroy him like that was amazing.

    Good performances all year round and a breath of fresh air.
