No. Calzaghe was a huge step up for both. But he wasn't the highest step. At 168, yes. But Calzage's 168 division at the time wasnt' a particularly strong one. I did not mean to suggest this (if I did). Calzaghe is clearly the better fighter among the 3. I don't think, however, that being a better fighter than Kessler and Lacy makes one a great fighter. Not Kessler and Lacy. I was speaking of Kessler's and Lacy's respective career paths. Let's assume they had beaten Calzaghe. They would still have had options to continue their career and step up their competition.
Calzaghe does not have a win that holds a candle to Hatton's win over Tszyu. Unlike Hopkins, Tszyu's prior performance against Mitchell - a fight many favored Mitchell to win (due to Tszyu's layoff, blah blah blah) - was a very impressive outing. Hatton made that same fighter quit on his stool a few months later. While arguments have been made that Tszyu was, like Hopkins is, old (Personally, I don't buy this. Tszyu has had trouble with pressure fighters before) there is no way he was as past it as Hopkins is. Tszyu actually attempted to impose his will on Hatton and Hatton was able to impose his will on Tszyu. At no point in tonight's fight did Hopkins really make a concerted effort to impose his will on Calzaghe. Even then, he (Hopkins) was competetive. Calzaghe did not do anything close to making Hopkins quit on his stool.
I have nothing but respect for Hatton. The guy truly set out to prove he was the best fighter in the world. Regardless of the outcome, he took the risks to be great.
He should have fought Cotto a long time ago though. He could have fought Tszyu earlier in their careers. He should have fought Sharmba Mitchell. He should have fought Carlos Quintana. He should have fought Zab Judah. He should have fought Arturo Gatti. He should have fought Diego Corrales. He should have fought Jose Luis Castillo much earlier when Castillo was still in his prime. He should have fought in America a lot earlier. His fight with Collazo shoud have been a loss. The only credit I give is he fought PBF in his prime, and moved up in weight to do it. He should have, could have, but never did. I do consider him to be a good fighter, but he never proved it in the ring against the very best in their primes, and that's what counts.
Tszyu and Mayweather are better than any of the fighters mentioned above. I agree that he COULD have done more. What he actualy did do, however, is commendable and enough to accurately gauge where he stands as a fighter.
To be fair, Kesssler hasn't proven that he is fluff (unlike Lacy). Then again, he hasn't proven that he isn't either. Let him fight another good fighter, then decide.
Joe Calzaghe is one of the greatest fighters of our era. give it five years people wilol look back and give him the credit he deserves. He will retire an All Time Great!
Another **** thread set up to discredit a man who has done nothing but defeat every fighter put in front of him. You all are a pathetic lot!
