IB, you bought the "XXXX can outwork floyd because of his fight style"?. I'm amazed, I thought that 1200 punches a fight pacman made clear once and for all that outworking floys is not as easy as throwing a lot of punches.

I agree with the hearns stuff, though.

 

Who has the best chance of beating him?

 

I think to beat Mayweather (clearly) the first thing you need to be able to do is cut off the ring very effectively, without it you'll be chasing shadows all day or alternatively have a superior reach (which is unlikely given that Floyd has a massive reach) and a great jab, so someone like Hearns for sure automatically causes him problems.

But for those without, you can't be stopped in your tracks, you have to stay on him and just bring pressure, hit him everywhere but at the same time be intelligent, it's certainly a difficult task.

I was surprised you could say something like that. Not that you cannot say it or think it actually, only that if you say it I would be surprised.

 

That's part of why Pacquiao lost. Because he's not good at cutting off the ring.

 

He gets into the ropes more or less easily, he usually looks for the ropes actually.As you have said, I think the key is to outsmart him once you get him on the ropes. And the first thing you have to do, is not to attack him automatically, because he uses the ropes to predict his opponent's behaviour and you will be insta-countered. I dont see anyone outsmarting a guy that can dodge the punches canelo threw to his head, but stood still and without dodging the punches he threw to his chest. You need to be a foreteller to do such a thing.

The "reach" card is the only one I see feasible. That's why i said hearns too.

Manny should retire right now IMO, he's shot and its quite obvious for anyone.

Wlad better retire before Joshua comes to the top. Too risky to fight AJ when you're 40+.

 

I think that Floyd's hand issues played a major part in him evolving into a 60/40 defensive fighter. He is by nature an offensive fighter, as evidenced by his first twenty or so fights. He adapted as his hands started to suffer from the pressure he was subjecting them to. He figured out how hard he could punch in a twelve round fight and still preserve them throughout the fight. His offense suffered but his defense prospered. With time, it got progressively worse and he ended up being over the top defensive. It showed in the Berto fight. He tried to knock Berto out and ended up injuring both his hands. His hands were his weakness.

 

I often point Floyd's hand issues out to the don't-knows and Floyd critics and they sometimes actually begin to appreciate mayweathet while thinking deeper about the realities of the sport
