Bygone monikers you prefer over their eventual replacements...

I thought Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns was a better name than his subsequent monicker of "The Motor City Cobra", which I also like though.

I remember Emanuel Steward saying in an interview that the mayor of Detroit asked him to change the nickname because the city already had a bad reputation for murders, and Hearns calling himself a hitman would only worsen things.

    Both of Hearns' are good.

That was a lateral move, neither an upgrade nor downgrade.

Joe Calzaghe's nickname used to be "The Italian Dragon", which I thought was a cool-sounding name. It reminded me of the old days where fighters would use a nickname that told fans about their background. "The Fighting Marine" Gene Tunney. "Irish" Micky Ward.

"The Pride Of Wales" is just lame. It sounds like they wanted to appeal to the British crowd and just couldn't think of a good name. For his last few fights (starting with the Lacy one), he should have gone back to his old monicker, given the sizeable Italian-American audience in the States.

You could be right, I was just a kid. The Tank would have been just as appropriate. I liked 'Iron' though, as people just shortened it to 'Iron Mike' - which was pretty badass.

Felix Sturm has gone through a bunch... currently "The Fighter", switched about two years ago from "Leonidas", and I could swear there was another before that but can't find it...

(and technically "Felix Sturm" is a ring name to begin with...his real name is Adnan Catic)

Sometimes boxers drop their ring name altogether without replacing it.

Then you have guys with seemingly cringe-worthy nicknames who stick with them come hell or high water, thick or thin.

James "Chunky" DeGale has been rocking it since he turned pro, giving no ****s what anybody thinks about it. You kind of have to respect that.

Ditto, Acelino "Popo" Freitas (nicknamed after the sound he made in his infancy suckling on his mother's teats).

In both cases their pride in their nicknames stem from its roots in their childhood.

Then you have Joey Hernandez, who became "Twinkle Fingers" in the boxing ring and has never shied away from it.

I'm pretty sure Denis Lebedev still uses "The White Swan" (a reference to Russia's Tu-160 bomber, pride of their Air Force) - as it has been referenced in recent German and Russian language articles within the last few months - though Boxrec don't have it listed on his page. I'm not sure if they did before.

Can you imagine Michael Buffer announcing Dr. Steelhammer Vs. The Black Cock sounds like a 70's porno.

I do like Denis lebedev a lot, but the poor guy is as ugly as sin, Denis wrong turn lebedev or Denis hills have eyes lebedev, or the steamroller because his face is completely flat.
