Byrd was Vitali's sparing partner for his fight with Gomez. Seems he and the Klitschkos are good friends now.

Byrd's opponent is 4-3 with two knockout losses. Byrd should be able to score an easy win. We won't be missing much if they don't televise this.

Flint native Chris Byrd has picked up another fight while helping Vitali Klitschko train for his title bout Saturday in Stuttgart, Germany. Byrd, the former IBF/WBO heavyweight champion, will fight Ralf Reimer in a cruiserweight bout on the undercard of Klitschko's WBC heavyweight title defense against Juan Carlos Gomez of Cuba. The 12-round main event will be broadcast by ESPN at 5 p.m.

Byrd (40-5-1, 21 knockouts) hasn't fought since May 16, when he was stopped by Shaun George in the ninth round of a light-heavyweight bout in Las Vegas. At 37, the shaky outing seemed to signal an end to his career.
But Byrd said during a visit to Flint last year that he intended to continue boxing, possibly at cruiserweight, and that he had simply lost too much weight too fast before the George fight.
"He said he was hoping to go until 38, but he didn't want to go out like that," Joe Byrd, Chris' father and trainer, said Sunday. "I'd still like to see him make his last fight here (in Flint) where he started."
Chris Byrd has been in Klitschko's camp in Austria all this month as a sparring partner. A southpaw, Byrd is helping Klitschko (36-2, 35) prepare for the left-handed Gomez (44-1, 35).
Byrd stopped Klitschko in April 2000 for the WBO title, then lost it to Vitali's brother, Wladimir Klitschko, six months later. Byrd also lost his IBF title to Wladimir in April 2006.
"But they ended up being friends," Joe Byrd said of his son and the Klitschkos.

I am sure Chris is just wanting a warm up fight to see if his shoulder that was operated on will hold up.

I just hope Chris doesn't screw around and get himself serioulsy hurt. Sounds like he should be safe with this opponent, but if he wins, a win sometimes makes a fighter flat out delusional.

It would be interesting to hear from Vitali on how Byrd was in sparing.

I wish Byrd woulda fought at CW long ago. I don't know if he has anything left, but I'll be rooting for him regardless. He's a fighter with HEART!

i think vitali went easy on him, not trying to hurt him. byrd was there to improve vitali's speed anyway.

I think the fight between Vitali vs Gomez will look a lot like Byrd/Wladimir II

though i think byrd's done at the top level, i gotta believe his very poor showing vs george was due in large part to the rapid weight loss. he's got family around him that i'm sure would not support him in continuing if he is seriously f'd up. the cruiser division is heating up a bit so i'm sure he's hoping to make some money down the road, but i don't know that he can get anywhere close to the top even if healthy for his age. he won't have the speed advantage with a lot of guys. perhaps he is just trying to go out with a couple of wins which would probably be the smartest thing to do
