Byrd was also pretty horrible against counter punchers (see Oquendo who beat both of them although Toney was done at that stage)
Much of the reason that Byrd was so good was because he was fighting giants. Giants are typically slower and have less skill because they can get away with doing things wrong or not really thinking in there, so Byrd was able to make a career out of making them look stupid. Nobody makes James Toney look stupid. I'd like Toney by a pretty good decision but it's a shame we didn't see more of him when he was on the roids He spanked Ruiz, Holy etc but Byrd would have been a cool one too. I checked out the Booker fight a month or so back for the first time. It's not a bad watch , I guess Bookers in jail for the booger sugar now.
Actually Toney looked very good in there until he injured his arm. Best shape he was in heavyweight. It was the last time he looked like the Toney of old.
Well Rot Jones Jr. Made Toney look stupid but im not gonna go there. Intriguing matchup. Was Birds defense better at heavy? Prob not, regardless Toney had more power. Ill go with Toney Unanimous if hes in shape, loses a split if hes a doughboy.
