Making David Tua look ordinary is one thing, trying to make Mike Tyson look ordinary is another. Tyson had more in common with Ike, than he did with Tua. Ike had no respect for Byrd and had him cornered against the ropes most of the time. And unlike Mike, Ike was relatively slow.
Byrd could have very possibly pulled it off against post prison Tyson but he'd have to fight near perfectly. He'd have to force Tyson to jab his way in and work the body with straight punches because he is probably going to lose the first few rounds. But with his defense and footwork he had the tools to trouble almost anyone.
Prime Tyson knocks him out in about 1 round. Byrd's doing well to last into the 2nd. And I'm someone who believes Byrd would have schooled Tyson if they'd met in 2001-2002.
Tyson was coming off a long layoff prior to facing Botha, nearly 2 years. Ditto for the Mathis fight, although he'd fought Mcneeley, that fight lasted about 1-2minutes and wasn't much of a workout, nor did it tell us anything about Tyson. Mathis was Tysons first proper fight since Ruddock in 91. Oh, and he knocked both those guys out once he figured them out. Mathis had a lot in common stylewise to Byrd. Difference is, Byrd would be facing a Tyson from a decade earlier.
