Why are there so many on this forum that don't accept the fact that Joe is way past his peak now and has been for some time? Even the Joe Calzaghe who gave Jeff Lacy a boxing lesson was past his peak and Joe at his prime would have KO'd or stopped him. Is it simply down to the Americans not being exposed to him until till late in his career or just the fact that big fights such as the Hopkins fight (where Hopkins pulled out last minute) wasn't made in his prime so had to endure fights like the Veit rematch? Personally I believe he was around his peak at round 2002/2003 era when he had genuine punching power to go with the rest of his abilities.
I have been banging on about this on ESB for a long time now. Just because he looked good against Lacy does not mean JC was not past his prime. Prime JC was between the Robin Reid -Woodhall - Brewer- B.Mitchell Period IMO.
Robin Reid gave Joe a very hard fight. But back then Reid was legit world class and had a style and enuff power to really hold Joe in check. Joe won but only just its one of his better wins. U could argue his prime stated around Veit 2. He then beat ashira one handed. Destroyed lacy out hustled bika who is a nightmare. Took a gimme in MAnfredo JNR then beat kessler and hopkins. He doesnt commit to punching like he used to but his ring smarts keep him out of danger. BUT Joe did used to stop people pretty often and he hasnt done that in a while and his speed is slowing a little. so 1999 - 2002 would proabbly be about right
There is no way JC was prime when he fought lacy and bika and in fact the Bika fight was the on ethta nailed it home to me that JC was shot.
he was in his prime vs hopkins, we'll see if he's still in his prime vs RJJ. V Hopkins Calzaghe was much more complete and much smarter than he was when he was younger and still has the speed, he may have lost a little bit of power but he was never a power puncher to start off with, he's in his prime unless he somehow deteriorated in the last couple of months
In his prime vs Hopkins atsch That was the slowest he's been since....ever. This is a man that relies on physical gifts. How the hell is he in his peak aged 36? He's at least 5 years past it.
On the other hand, Calzaghe didn't need more speed than he actually had for Hopkins. And I thought his footwork and composure, once he go the KD out of his system, were spectacularly good. That sort of thing comes with age. There are two things I don't think Calzaghe gets enough credit for - his fight plans and the Hopkins win.
yeah counterpunched joe pretty soundly. so calzaghe put the pedel down and used combinations and workrate to get past him, something reid has never looked good against was guys with a high workrate. i felt joe got it but it was just as close depends what impressed you more
