We're producing a documentary on pioneering female boxers in the US.

Do you keep any films or photos of women boxers in 1970s and 1980s? Do you know anyone who would be good to talk to?

We'd love to see them if you do!

Please reply to this thread if you do and I will pass on my email!

    Thank you!

I'd be surprised if there's a wealth of content related to women's boxing from the time period.

Did they usually fight on the men's undercard or were there dedicated female events?

Must say, I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to women's boxing from the 70s and 80s - in case you couldn't tell.

I did not even know there was woman’s boxing in 70s, and 80s.

The documentary does not sound like a very good idea anyway. Only you, and the people making it probably want to watch a documentary like that. Woman’s boxing today is not popular, and only makes some money, because it is on just before main events.

I suspect their will be a dearth of information on womens boxing during those decades.

In the 70s and 80s, women's boxing happened at the bus stop, lol.

I'm not aware of ANY women's boxing in those years.

I never heard of any and frankly don't think anyone would have watched or sanctioned it at all

How big of an audience could there really be for this documentary? I’m not saying these women don’t deserve to be recognized for being pioneers in their sport, but at the same time, I’d assume you are wanting to make some money off of this.

The following pages are from an article in the October 1980 issue of Boxing Illustrated. It covers the beginning of Women's Boxing in the United States and the Women's Boxing Ratings in 1980.

Some/most of the ads surrounding the article would've gotten someone fired today. Pretty tone deaf and rough-looking ads to accompany an article trying to promote women's boxing.

Anyway, good luck with your documentary.

Documentaries on obscure stuff or fringe sports are often very interesting though.

I would definitely be interested in seeing this. Histories I've seen of 100+ years ago have a fair amount of women's boxing, I want to say it was done at the 1904 Olympics, then at some point it seems to have disappeared.

And it was less popular in the 70's & 80's. Take it easy. Maybe the OP's grandma was a pioneer in womens boxing, thus making it as popular as it is today.
