Call Me Crazy, But I See Gassiev Unifying the Heavyweight Division

    Murat Gassiev currently sits among the four major heavyweight titleholders, yet many still rank him as the softest of the group. Beside Hrgović, Dubois and Kabayel, he is too often treated as the afterthought. That view, I believe, does him a serious disservice.

    The way he finished Kubrat Pulev was emphatic. Even allowing for Pulev’s age, the left hook that ended the night was the kind of single-shot power that changes the temperature of a division. Gassiev carries genuine truck-like force in both hands. He also owns a chin that has absorbed high-level punishment without folding and at 32 he still looks very much in his physical prime — something that is easy to overlook given how long he has already been around.

    His experience is genuine. He shared the ring with Oleksandr Usyk in the undisputed cruiserweight final, absorbed that education, recovered from a later setback against Otto Wallin, and has since rebuilt with authority. That combination of power, durability and ring craft makes him a far more awkward proposition than the current hierarchy suggests.

    I am not claiming he will stroll through the division. What I am saying is that Gassiev is built for the hard nights. Against Kabayel, Dubois or Hrgović he offers the real prospect of prolonged, punishing wars — and in the right match-up he is more than capable of emerging with a second belt, perhaps even a third. If the titles begin to consolidate, do not be surprised if the man they are quietly undervaluing is still standing near the summit.

    It is a long shot. I accept that. But the tools, the timing and the pedigree are all present. History has a habit of rewarding the heavy-handed, battle-tested fighters the market overlooks. Gassiev may yet prove to be one of them.

    No way can he hurt Hrg, the others will have too much reach for him, we don't know if he can take a shot from a top 10 heavyweight, he's 32, the younger contenders will out last and if they meet him in their peak he'll be finished, he only has a couple of peak years left, it takes more than power to rule the heavyweight division.

    Fully impossible he could beat Hrgović (who is too tough and busy for him), Usyk would walk in the park out pointing him again, Fury outboxes him. Dubois way too tough and busy. Wardley too. Itauma would beat him fairly easy. He simply doesn’t throw enough punches. Wallin beat him.

    "Absorbed that education" is how I am going to describe every single loss a fighter has when they get beat 12-0 on the cards. I'm big on the Gassiev lineal train, always have been. King Murat era is just beginning.

    A) Gassiev's big shot is to the body. Is Hrgovic equally immune to body shots?

    B) Doesn't Hrg hav ea cut that any fighter could bust open to get the stoppage?

    C) He doesn't even have to. Someone else can beat Hrg and he can beat them.

    Nope. Not impossible. Unlikely, but far stranger things have happened.

    Who would beat Hrgovic but lose to Murat Gassiev ? We can't see the future but I struggle name anyone that could fit this description stylistically

    Dubois has beaten Hrgovic, and I could see him retiring after a couple of those hooks to the body.

    I admire your optimism, and as a medically certified Gassiev fanboy I would love to see it. In all actuality though he has a very small chance against Kabayel, who has been hurt once in his career against Smakici but showed little regard to the power of Makh and Zhang, so realistically Gassiev only has an outside chance of making a dent in him. It is a similar story with Dubois, but IMO DDD has shown more vulnerabilities during his career so I would give Murat a greater chance. And as for Hrgovic with his Tungsten chin, Gassiev seems very unlikely to be able to hurt him if Zhang and Itauma couldn't, and Hrgovic's length and volume make it very unlikely Gassiev could outpoint him either.
