It's about what you do in the ring and how you do it.....not what MOST believe will be an outcome of a particular match. PAV should be the favorite but what has he done or who has he defeated that warrants him being ahead of Bhop? Two wins over Jermain or a win over Miranda?
No man, I think you're way off base here and I usually agree with you or at least understand your points. P4P should be based on skill and ability. Meaning who would be the best fighter in the world if size and weight were all equalized. Now if you analyze the two of these guys over the past year and watched them both in the ring, what they can do and how good they can do it, Kelly Pavlik is the better fighter. Look at their common opponent, Pavlik destroyed Taylor and then CLEARLY beat him, as Hopkins fought a very close fight with him and then Clearly lost to him. You have seen obvious signs of a diminished fighter in Hopkins over his past 5 fights, low offensive output, increased holding and recently lack of stamina. While in Pavlik you don't see any REAL weakness in his game, the only criticism even Hopkins has is that he doesn't have a plan b....well nobody can stop his plan A yet so he hasn't needed a plan b. And he may still have one. But if you insist on using what they have done recently, then ok: Beating Jermain Taylor twice, destroying Miranda and destroying Lockett. merits a higher P4P ranking then: Losing to Jermain Taylor twice, beating Tarver, beating a blown up Wright (who was winning early and may have beaten Hops at Middle) and losing an UGLY fight to Calzaghe. :deal
I see your point.....but if what you say is true then there would be MANY up and coming raw talented kids like Gamboa who would be gracing the P4P ranks based on his style, atlethic ability and talent alone. P4P is just as much based on the criteria you stated as well as the "Substance" in which a fighter holds in regards to ring accomplishments. When Fighters like Bhop, Mayweather, PAC, DLH ect move up and down and around in weights and "PREFROM" it warrants their ranking in the P4P rankings.....Most of the time you'll see that talent, Skills, Athletisim all go hand in hand when considering whether or not a fighter can successfully move up or down in weight to best the division ELITE. Which is why you rarely ever see a HW on the P4P list....they normally stay at HW and won't shed weight to best the Champions in the Cursier or LHW divisions. Plus the HW division now is more less BIG men imposing their phsyical stature over the others.....Skill is limited for the most part in the HW division. I agree that now PAV is the better fighter, but you can't confidently say that just b/c PAV beat Jermain twice that he'd beat Bhop. Sometimes its that easy but when you are talking about guys like PAV and Bhop there is so much more depth and variables that come in to play.....PAV is a slugger/boxer/puncher....he likes to go forward and BHOP likes to lay back and counter...stylistically this fight seems to be a good style match up for Bhop but those damn variables can cause some hesitation...PAV is a skilled fighter as well..he's proven to be able to adapt but BHOP is all about adaptation within the ring smack dab in the middle of a fight. But back to the P4P list and what warrants a fighters ranking.... I SEE YOUR POINT! PAV's wins over Jermain...and Miranda seem to be a little better than loosing twice to Taylor although the 1st one was questionable...I thought Bhop won but oh well...then Beating Winky who was blown up, but still a tough challenge and P4P fighter and then Tarver....I think the Tarve win is what really solidified his status although it could be higher than what he really deserves.
You're right, thats why P4P drives me up the wall. Because there can be a fighter that you really believe to be better then another, but there are so many variables at the elite level that you just never know. Look at Cotto for example. A fighter can look flawless until he meets a fighter that exposes a few bad flaws in him. Lets get away from the P4P thing, we both seem to agree. Back to the Hops / Pav matchup. What did Jermain do to trouble Hopkins in those two fights that Pavlik can't do and maybe do better? Handspeed and athleticism? You can say that, but Jermain didn't beat Hopkins with either one of those. He stood right in front of him for the most part and just out worked him really, getting outboxed in the process...but he just outworked him. For the record, I had Hops winning the first fight also. Both were fights where one guy won the "fight" but lost the "match/decision" actually. The difference is that Pavlik is much more technically sound then Taylor was in those fights. He's also stronger, and will be more active....and He won't cower and shut down when the going gets tough, although I don't think it will get tough for him in there.
ts has a solid point. I see p4p like you do. Who would be the better fighter if their weights were the same. I have Pavlik ahead of Hopkins. Pavlik at 5, Hopkins at 10
That's funny because i made a similiar thread a couple of months ago. Even in their most recent issue, he is dead set at #4. I love Hopkins but i don't get why he's so high. Maybe it's a Philly thing. Isn't The Ring stationed around there? Hopkins has his monthly "How to" section where he's showing us how to do certain boxing skills. So The Ring must be close to Philly to be able to take pictures of him every month in the gym.
:good We are on the same page but bro. You know......Bhop has his hands full that is for sure. Pav isn't like other boxers who get in to all the talking and getting hyped up. He's just like he is in the ring....cool, calm, collected and a workman like killer. He does hunt or stalk his opponent all the while laying whatever hands he can on them. But he's got very good technique with soild skills. This will be Hops toughest battle at his stage of his career and you have me second guessing who is going to win. I was originally going with Pav based on his destruction of Gary and Hops loss to Joe, but then I began leaning towards Hop due to his counter punching style....I honeslty can't call this one but i look forward to watching it.....
