Cheap shot. I lived pretty close to him for years and can attest to Johnson having had more harrowing experiences to deal with than losing a professional fight (and not just the ones recounted in this thread).
37, probably already peaked... Definitely not a bad decision. Head trauma can exacerbate mental health problems. I was disappointed that the Joe Smith fight fell apart, but it was probably for the better. Winning the British titles, challenging for a world title and losing in a very game performance. Nothing to hang his head about. I'm not sure he could have achieved that much more.
All fighters should be forced to retire at 37 except Joe Joyce who turned pro late, nowhere to go at 37 really.
Good guy, I wish him all the best. Still remember the left hook that put Beterbiev on his ass. That was a brutal fight and the first knockdown Beterbiev scored should have been a foul because he was outside the ropes and the ref yelled stop long before the punch was thrown. Beterbiev was good enough to beat him but Johnson landed some great shots on Beterbiev including the one that knocked him down. Great fight. Thanks Callum for the bravery you showed and the success you had in the ring. You were a legit, top fighter and should hood your head high. Get the personal issues ironed out and have a long and happy life. A boxer’s time in the ring is limited and there is MICH more to life. Wishing you the best. I know I’m an idiot writing this as if a fighter will see my comments but who knows, anything is possible. I was a fan and rooted for Johnson whenever I watched his fights. Tough, entertaining fighter.
Respect your decision Callum, no big online melodramas, no look at me look at me publicity. After trying to sort things found he at present could not, gave his reasons which must have been difficult, and hung up his gloves. Every good wish is given that Callum can resolve or at least manage these issues, and he can find a role outside of the ring that brings him greater peace and happiness than he is at present is experiencing.
Shame, sad to hear. Hope he finds peace/solace with something else. He was a force in the division and I’d awaited his return.
