Callum Johnsons resume does not prove he is above British level. He should take the Buatsi fight

Buglioni in the first, lots of time out for personal reasons (father dying), and a brave performance against Beterbiev.

No, he isn't world class, but he is comfortably European level at this point. He may well have unfinished business at domestic level and some tasty fights could entertain, but the difference between domestic and world is often large, and these days I feel European is overlooked.

 

Buatsi V Johnson is a good fight and I'd like to see it now but can't blame Johnson if he wants to try and push for more world level fights, he did well v Beterbiev so why not, there's plenty big fights to be made and at 33 I doubt he wants to hang around looking for domestic level paydays.

Buatsi will likely fight Burton next and can push for domestic honours after that or move to Euro level, he has time and can fight Johnson down he road if need be.

Johnson proved he is world class by his destruction of Buglioni and by his approach/performance to the Bertebiev fight. Like a world class fighter he went out on his sword and dropped Berterbiev, unlike other British fighters in similar situations who blamed it on a toe or just froze like a dear in headlights.

Inactivity/bad management has led to him not having a great resume but that doesnt mean he isnt an elite level boxer.

He would ice Anthony Yarde, the most protected fraud in UK boxing today. But we all know Yarde's next opponent and the one after that will be TBAs on 1 weeks notice. According to the "rankings" Yarde is an elite level/world class boxer.

So message to Yarde, come on take a fight against Callum Johnson.

 

Maybe, maybe not, it's his age that's the issue, he is 33 years old, time isn't on his side and he doesn't want to be hanging around at British level.

He has already won British and Commonwealth titles, he had a fight with Beterbiev and did reasonably well all things considered.

Is he world level? Probably not but in my opinion he can't be wasting time at 33 years old fighting for British titles again.

Spot on that. Once you win the British title you’re clearly above British level because you’re Britain’s best. He’s won the commonwealth too and at the age of 33 as you say he’s not going to be hanging around. If you was Johnson you’d vacate the British. Try and get a decent international name under your belt before you’d hope Eddie will get you that last pay day in a world title fight before you retire.

 

Exactly, if Johnson was 23 I'd say yeah go back to British level or maybe European make a few defences and then go again but at 33 years old he can't be doing all that.

You are spot on, a decent name and then another world title shot, if he falls short again then he will either have to take a biggish domestic clash for good/decent money against a Yarde or Buatsi or retire.
