We don't know though do we as none of us are privy to their internal planning. I saw something from JG to the effect that they knew their next two opponents. If the Canelo fight is the endgame then maybe those two fights are important either for preparation or to help increase Smith's profile in the US or Mexican markets. Maybe BJS wouldn't be as desirable an opponent for those criteria?

Ultimately it's irrelevant. Warren and BJS are in a hole because they have a high risk low reward fighter and no-one to fight. Either they make an offer that Callum or someone comparable likes or they don't. BJS is where he is due to bad decisions on his and his trainers part. It's no-one else's responsibility to rescue his career, least of all a guy who has been delivering consistently for some time now and who has plans of his own.

But this misses a point about comparing separate values. It's like two bands doing a co-headline show. One usually sell out arenas, sell loads of records and so on, and the other are popular at a lower level, have a dedicated fanbase but never sell as many tickets. Stick them both on the same bill and is it a massive show? Yes. Should both be paid the same? Probably not.

Saunders is in his position through several major faults of his own. He's demonstrably unpopular, and therefore what he can bring to the Smith fight has to be considered against what he can bring himself as a headline act. And at the moment that appears to be very little. You're right that Smith Saunders is a big fight, but I think you overestimate what Saunders brings to it.

Saunders brings uncertainty to it in the way that he could get injured or do something stupid to screw the plans up at any point, he has previously.
