I've just watched the smith ryder fight. I can't see canelo losing. Smith shells up, squares up and leans forward when Ryder was close. You can't cover your ribs if you do that. I expect canelo to alternate the head and body to get those elbows moving up and down. The more he does that, sooner or later those body punches will start to land cleanly.

Has Smith ever been dropped, staggered or hurt... Not to my recollection.. I think canelo will win but banging out kovalev whose so far past his last legs he had to borrow someone else's doesn't make him a big banger

Smith went life and death against Skoglund, struggled against that kickboxer Holzen, fought a one-armed Groves whose shoulder still hadn't healed well over a year after he fought Smith, and he won a Clenelo type gift over John Ryder. I'd love to see him smash that ginger toad into the middle of next week but I just can't see it happening.

Even if he had ideal preparation: A full 12 week camp to prepare for Clenelo, the best possible sparring with more than four weeks to try and arrange it, was able to whip himself into his best ever shape and had been locked in on Clenelo from day one he'd still be up against it and when you're fighting someone who only has to make it to the final bell to get their hand raised it forces you into a position where you either have to dominate every round or have to take more chances than your opponent does because you know you need to score a KO to get the win.

I honestly think Canelo is going to punch him in the liver, rip it out and eat it with fava beans and a nice bottle of chianti. Wish I was wrong but stylistically this is all in the favour of Clenboy.

Yes that breadstick physique is really intimidating. They model all the He-Man toys after Smith.

Canelo comes in roided, tries to cover up to his opponent's shots, throws a few meaningless punches that are blocked, the commentators go on about Canelos boxing skills, Byrd gives him a victory, and the story continues...

I see Canelo's upper body movement causing Smith fits.

I don't see that happening. Smith is huge but he doesn't use his size. He stands in front of his opponents too much and often comes down to the level of his opponent and doesn't fight tall or use his full range often giving up his reach advantage to fire shots which will give Canelo plenty of chances of counter him.

Smith also doesn't clinch inside he shells up behind that high guard, Canelo will be allowed to work on the inside because of this and will work him over up close.

Canelo with his head movement will have no problem slipping inside, especially as Smith isn't much of a mover, he relies on his height too much to be out of range but we saw vs Ryder how easy it was for him to simply walk into range and fire and he even gives up that range to work up close too much.

I just can't see how Smith wins, he's going to have to totally reinvent himself as a fighter, learn to fight tall, clinch on the inside, move laterally and counter punch.

A 6' 3'', 30-year-old man fighting at 168 and trying to hang with Canelo? Can't see it. To be honest Smith should have moved up to LHW as soon as he won the WBSS. It could have been him in with Kovalev instead of Yarde, and maybe he'd have got to fight Canelo at 175.

Thing is with Smith, he's a very basic boxer who uses his size advantage very well. But against Canelo he's dealing with a fighter who can flip a size disadvantage in his favour through skill, especially his excellent footwork.

Canelo's formula: Get under the jab, sit on his chest, work the body, remember how many levels he is above John Ryder and finish what the 'The Gorilla' started...

Smith only had 4 weeks to prepare v Canelo it's not long enough, fingers croseed he's been working hard way before this.
Due to the time to prepare I'm going with Canelo, hope I'm wrong.

I recall writing off Smith in the WBSS final because of his route to it. Looking back now it's not that bad and although I had Ryder winning his fight against Smith last year I think Smith turns up in this one. He's got a decent jab, height and lethal back hand that I think everyone including Canelo might be overlooking. I wouldn't be surprised if Canelo struggles to get inside particularly the first 5-6 rounds of the fight. I'm picking Smith by late KO. Canelo wasn't exactly scintillating in his last out. Just got the job done with great KO in the 11th
