Callum Smith and George Groves could be in line for a big domestic super-middleweight showdown next year at Anfield. Smith and Groves were victorious on Saturday on the undercard of Cleverly-Bellew II a the Echo Arena in Liverpool. Groves set up a world title shot against WBC champion Anthony Dirrell with an unimpressive stoppage of Denis Douglin after Smith stepped up in class to defeat Nikola Sjekcola on points, something only Arthur Abraham and Sakio Bika had managed before. Knocking on the door And Smith's trainer Joe Gallagher believes a clash between the two at the home of Liverpool FC could be a goer as early as autumn 2015. "George Groves is in our weight division and in our governing body. He fought the other night and that is a fight we are itching for," Gallagher said at the opening of a new residential school for students with autism in Northwich. "I know he's got the world title shot first, and hopefully he goes and wins that against Dirrell, and Callum Smith will be knocking on the door and banging at his heels for a shot at that title. "I think that's a good fight, possibly in autumn time next year. Callum Smith and George Groves at Anfield."
This is a good fight but Groves' movement of both head and feet would cause huge problems for Smith. Groves all day.
Judging by groves last fight id actually take smith in this one. His reach advantage could be hard for groves to overcome
Smith needs to take on at least 1 genuine top 15 fighter before fighting Groves, I hope he gets 2 good fights in before the summer. I also doubt Groves will beat Dirrel so this won't be for a World Title. Smith has the height and reach as well as the power to keep Groves on his bike and wear him out before going for a KO. He doesn't move well going backwards and hasn't being put under pressure, questions remain about his chin, Groves is great offensively and could exploit this. Currently I think the second outcome is more likely, although Smith can improve and Groves could continue to regress or even get knocked out again so anything could happen between now and then.
I can't pick'em can Callum Smith take a punch though?I'm not sure, It's all well and good fighting feather fisted fighters like he has done, but there must be a reason his first fight in the upper echlons of the division was against Stejloka as he has like 7 KO's to his name. George Groves still carries a better punch than Smith and once he finds his range like he did against 'Momma's boy' Smith will be in trouble. I think Smith's handlers should be careful what they wish for, while Groves was pretty mediocre in that last fight he still carries a hefty punch and that quick handspeed. Throwing a jab at him all day long won't work, eventually Groves will counter it with that big overhand right and then we'll see what Smith is made of.
Yeah I tend to agree, not really seen anything that really impresses me. But then again GG still has a lot to prove as well. My view would be its too early to put smith in with GG yet
Too soon for Smith in my opinion and needs to step up, but I think he can do Groves. Out of the two I think Groves is the more overrated fighter.
would like to see c smith in with rebrasse and another similar rated opponent to see how good he is, not sure why groves will go to anfield for the fight, presumably he'll be champion if the fight happens and want it in London, (Chelsea's ground?) Paul smith vs Rocky fielding would be a good undercard for that fight if it did happen,
Callum Smith might be able to beat Groves comfortably the way Groves is looking. I dunno if Callum Smith can take a punch, though. Both seem very beatable.
Groves has a date with Dirrell and I do not see him winning that on recent form so it might be a long road back for Groves. Callum Smith Vs Rocky Fielding is a natural fight to make right now.
