they should put him in with the British chin-checking gatekeeper Khomitsky before getting too excited about his prospects. :rofl
And who are the ATGs standing in his way? He's way above British level already - the only reason he fought for this title was the legacy of doing the same thing as his brothers. He's already ranked 1st by the WBC, he'll be top 5 IBF and top 10 with both other orgs after this fight. DeGale is a tough fight, but I'm not sure DeGale would like that fight - who from Jack, Chudinov and Abraham does he have to fear?
This guy would beat Ward, Degale, Groves, Kovalev, all on the same night. This guy is insane, what a performance.
According to Hearn and his trainer, they'll be looking to put Smith in a WBC title eliminator, then go for Jack. I think if Murray beats Abraham, Hearn might make a fight between them.
I think it would be a solid fighter to have on his CV. So long as it didn't detract from his own aspirations, I'd say go for it.
I think that's a good fight for him, I have a feeling they will go after Badu Jack. DeGale wants a unification fight with Jack if he gets past Bute as expected but they might well sell it to DeGale like this "If Smith goes and beats Jack then we can have a huge PPV, stadium all British unification fight for far more money and you still get the unification fight".
Even more attractive if Murray fights Smith to unify before DeGale takes on the winner. Maybe even get DeGale to take on Chudinov and beat him (like he did twice in the amateurs) and you have a dream situation.
Knocking Rocky Fielding in 1 and going 12 rounds with Rebrasse and Sjekloca tells you isn't much of an indication of how a fighter would perform against the very best in the world. Saying that he beats James DeGale just shows how some people like to jump on bandwagons and go to far overrating the fighters. James DeGale won Olympic gold medal. He then went on to become IBF champion, beating one of the most skilled and difficult opponents possible at SMW, Andre Dirrell. So if you are placing a bet on Callum Smith, who didn't and quality for the Olympics and hoping that in the meantime he managed to improve so much and reached DeGale's level without even facing any world level opposition, then good luck, but if they fight and DeGale makes easy work of him, don't call your guy a bum. He hasn't even proven that he's the best prospect in the division, yet alone capable to take on the world champions next. It doesn't take an ATG to take care of Callum Smith.
