Yeah instead of taking **** for another fight that will likely end up like hops-winky, they just decided to put it on regular HBO.
Not just Hopkins style but Calzaghe-Kessler was apparently the lowest rated HBO fight of all time (unfair since the fight was very good). Gotta suck if you're Showtime...you showcase Calzaghe a bunch of times....then HBO gets his two big money fights. Yikes.
old news homie. actually the cotto-gomez and cintron-margo is hbo aswell and not ppv. seems like april will be a good month for boxing.
holy crap, if that's true what the hell is going on over in the states with boxing fans if they didn't watch calzaghe kessler?!!!!
Joe C has 0 clout in the US to the average guy walking the streets and so its a free b....well and Hopkins isnt the most scintillating performer either lately. They think its the usual Euro bum with a bunch of cheeseball defenses coming to get smashed as has always been the case.
I have not a clue...I can't speak for my countrymen on this one. Pure unadulterated BS IMO. HBO did a terribly **** poor job marketing the fight too. There was no "Countdown To", no real hype on it, no advertisements or anything major to promote it. Then the night of the fight, the lead up to it was more or less asking random people in Whales how nice of a guy Joe Calzaghe was. Nothing about how great of a fighter he was. I also believe there was a showtime card the same night. I WANNA SAY Juarez-JMM but I may be wrong.
To me that shows how either a) unknowledgable most american boxing fans are or b) how arrogant / prejudiced they are. Take your pick but for a country with the boxing base it has like the states to have such low veiwing figures you have to question
Hopkins is labeled as a boring fighter anymore, and the average guy dont even know who Calzaghe is, proof being, the Kessler/Calzaghe unification fight got record lows for a HBO main event.
What? I thought by Calzaghe beating an American ATG like Manfredo that he would earn clout in the USA? :rofl
You have to advertise a fight for it to be watched. IIRC Antonio Tarver vs Elvir Miriqui outdrew Vazquez-Marquez uno. It's all about advertisement...point the finger at how shitty HBO decided to hype the fight. Honestly noone I talked to even knew the fight was taking place. That's the worst part about it.
Really? Portuguese and French soccer fans follow their league teams very fiercely. But for some reason, all their best players end up jumping ship to leagues in Spain, Italy, and ENGLAND. Example A: Cristiano Ronaldo. Why? Because leagues like the Premiership is where the prestige is. Where the money is. Where the names are. If you don't think that by beating Hopkins, Calzaghe isn't going to be a household name worldwide, you're mistaken. Hate it or love it, America is where the greats fight (at least occasionally). Ask Lennox Lewis, Naseem Hamed, and Ricky Hatton.
