45-0 currently and whilst his age has to count against him, he could possibly be 46-0 in September, leaving him the potential for 47-0 in Jan, 48-0 in June, 49-0 in Sept and 50-0 in Decem/Jan 2010. He would be 37-38, so it's a possibility. Say this is how it plays ou 46. Beats RJJ in Sept at LHW 47. Beats Pavlik in Jan at SMW 48. Beats one of Bute/Froch/Taylor in June at SMW 49. Beats winner of Tarver/Dawson in June at LHW 50. Beats another champ (Erdei/Diaconu) in Decem/Jan at LHW. Where would you put him in this current generation? For me, 50 fights without a loss, 23 title defenses at SMW, 3 (Ring) title defenses at LHW while unifying a couple belts in the process His achievements would be better than any other fighter of his era and whilst he still loses H2H against Jones Jr, he would have to be seen as accomplishing more than any other fighter in the past 15 years, no?
In terms of accomplishments, yes I agree with your argument; if he fought those fighters (though it would have to be Dawson and not Tarver, Bute and not Froch, etc), he'd be #1 on accomplishments...though technically if we're talking 15 years, Whitaker would still out-do him. But this generation, he would have accomplished the most, despite not being the best H2H fighter. The problem, however, is that you're asking him to literally double-up on his career accomplishments in a very short time frame, at an advanced age. The chance of even half of those fights happening and goin Calzaghe's way are very, very slim.
that wont happen- he is very protective of his unbeaten record and will not take a risk of having too many more fights. Prob y he fighting a fading rjj now- cos he wants to protect his record
I disagree. I think RJJ is the biggest challenge in that list and I'm a HUGE Pavlik supporter but ultimately the style he goes in with, would make him cannon fodder for the way Joe operates. Against Bute or Taylor or Froch, again, he's got a stylistic advantage, the only worry I have there is he wouldn't be overly motivated for the fight The winner of Tarver/Dawson, even if it is Tarver, is still a valid fight for him to make, Tarver would be better for Joe cause he'd run his mouth and get Joe ready. I think Joe passed his hardest hurdle in B-Hop, that style was made to defeat Joe and it didn't do it, RJJ is his next hurdle due to handspeed and the fact that he can go with Joe unlike anyone else. After that? I think it could be smooth sailing
Considering the way Joe jerked Top Rank and Team Pavlik around I doubt if they would drop the Abraham fight in January for Joe.
Secondly, beating at least a few of the above names is FAR more important for Joe's legacy than going 50-0.
Didn't know people who wanted to protect their record made a habit of gaining every title in their division, beating #1 ranked fighters in their own division and the division above them either.
So you say, but Joe has more names in his list than Marciano did. Marciano is remembered for 50/0. He didn't even have half the title fights Joe has had, either.
It is an amazing thing for any fighter to go 50-0. Joe's wins over Eubanks, Kessler, Lacy and Hopkins speak for themsleves. And having Jones on his resume will look better over time. Calzaghe doesn't get much credit for beating Omar Sheika, Byron Mitchell and Mario Veit. But these caliber guys were the types who upset Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson.
fighters who fight 43 year olds and then another 40 year old- thats what i call protecting their record- fighting fighters past their best
RJJ is nowhere near Joe's biggest challenge. Roy no longer has the legs, he will just cover up and let Joe go to work. Joe will probably get staggered at some point but Jones does not have the gas anymore to finish him late in a fight. He has no hope of winning on the cards. Dawson is Joe's biggest challenge by far. Joe does not have the power to crack Dawson's chin at 175, and he will be up against a slick southpaw, in his prime, with huge height and reach advantages, and comparable hand and footspeed. IMO Joe will be thoroughly outboxed. Problem here is that Tarver has the power to crack Dawson's chin, and may do so before this fight becomes a possibility. Tarver himself would be 40 years old and only limited worth legacy wise, however. I agree that Joe beats Bute, Taylor, and Froch convincingly at this stage. Anything could happen in a Pavlik fight. Joe is skilled enough to box to a wide decision, but if he gets caught, Kelly is the one who could finish him.
Yori Boy Campas could have retired at 56-0, Brian Nielson at 49-0, etc. Yet neither will be remembered at all.
