Calzaghe will have fought 28 fights away from home and only 18 at home after the Jones fight ?
    { 2 USA, 1 Germany, 1 Denmark, 1 Scotland, 23 England}
Just for Americans information, Joe would have faced many hostile crowds whilst fighting Englishmen in England, England and Wales big sporting rivals, the countrys were at war 600 years ago, this just adds to his achievements.

You do realize that with England and Wales close to each other, many Welshmen would make the trip just to watch Joe fight. So I guess that evens it out.

pfffft. Wales is apart of the United Kingdom, no?

It's like having an american fighter from Philly fight in chicago. Ooooh so far away from home!!

So if Pavlik v Hopkins had been in Youngstown, you would have considered that a home fight for Hopkins?

    no but it wouldn't matter.

It's a lot different though you must admit for an american fighter to fight in Mexico or the UK, or a UK fighter to America or Columbia, etc., then say Wales to England!! Same **** basically.

Nah, dude. Noone will buy that. In that case Ottke fought away several times because he fought in different 'lander' in Germany than his own. Each lander has its own government etc. However, you don't see anyone arguing that Ottke is a world traveller, so you?

The main problems of fighting away are: coping with new language (if you have been to a country where english was not spoken and you felt lost at the airpost then you have an idea), coping with jet lag, coping with cultural differences, coping with a hostile crowd.

Only the last one can be considered and that is usually the least problem. Fighters who freeze abroad tend to do so because they have build up milk-acids and tensions from coping with cultural, lingual etc. differences in days before the fight.

According to this logic British people are ruled by a foreigner cause their prime minister is from Scotland. You british Calzaghe huggers are ridiculous.

Yes, I'm a fan, but an attempt to spin it so that suddenly Joe is a fighter-on-the-road - well, that is ridiculous to say the least. And it can only make people sceptical of Joe.

Joe is a great fighter, but people trying to spin him makes things worse, because then people start questioning whether the good things they actually thought were true may not be?

Actually when Calzaghe faught English fighters in England he was the away fighter and the fans were English dominated and very hostile.

See Richie Woodhall, David Starie and Robin Reid fights for proof.

Obviously when he faught Lacy in Manchester that would be viewed home turf as the English support the Welsh fighter in that context but to think that the majority of the crowd is Welsh or that the Welsh have thousands of travelling boxing fans (the ones who do are incredible) is rubbish and myopic.

Wales to Newcastle, where he faught Robin Reid is about a 6 hour drive...

So a few people on this thread are partially right without anybody being completely right I guess.

How many fighters venture into other fighters' countries and come away victorious?

Think about it for a minute. It doesn't happen all that often and when it does it looks like it happens all the time. Bradley beat Witter in England but what about the last few challengers who fought Witter there? Harris and Corley were beaten easily. Johnson lost his belt to Woods in the UK, who subsequently lost it to Tarver in the US. See what I'm getting at? Hatton's only loss came in the states. In the UK he wins easily.

Nobody goes to Germany and beats the Russian fighters. Santos took his 154 lb. title there and lost it to Dzinzruk. Bell went to France and lost his belts against the same guy he took them from in Mormeck.

So...when you think of the fact that Calzaghe has fought and won in Germany, the United States, and England (say what you want, he's Welsh and he fought Englishmen) that's pretty impressive. He even won a fight in Denmark. Who else can say that they beat 3 opponents from 3 different countries in their backyards? Steve Cunningham and that's it.
