Calzaghe always fighting Away

Are you kidding? I'm sure there are many fighters that's done that. Not really something I can just name off the top of my head, but if you give me a few minutes to browse boxrec, I could probably name more than just a few..

Ok you got me there but Cunningham beat 2 guys who were previously undefeated in their home countries and did it back to back.

 

I am Australian so I should be able to say this with out being called a 'bigoted yank' or whatever, but to make it to the higher level in boxing you should go to America and establish yourself there. Like it or not, the talent pool is the deepest over there. If not for that then for the simple purpose of variety on your resume you should try to get some fights over there. The fact that Calzaghe hardly left the shores of a tiny little Island and never went to America until he was 35 (or even attempt to unify his second tier title) is highly suspect. Calzaghe has said himself that he was never highly self confident until he won over Lacy, so it's pretty obvious that he was proteting himself fighting locally for the majority of his career. Even it it was the case as Calzaghe says it was that he didn't need to go to America to procure the best fights (not the case at all) there is so much money and prestige to be gained from going to America that it would have been a very atractive option. The only reason not do it it would be if you are comfortable fighting in your local area against fighters who were known entities. The fact of the matter is that Calzaghe didn't make a stand as a world class boxer until recently and no matter how successful you think he might have been its very late in his career to demand retropsectively all the recognition he denied himself with protection. And people who say in retrospect that Roy ducked calzaghe 10 years ago or even that he should have considered going to Britain to fight a protected non-entity like Calzaghe was should be aborted as adults.
