Well for years Americans have been a little ignorant about European fighters, look at Lennox Lewis who was belittled for years and only had legitimate respect after he had retired from Americans. The same thing Americans said about Euro's, some Euro's are now saying about Americans. Fair game if you ask me, from a boxing point of view. Anyone who generalises and says all Americans are ignorant though are the real idiots.
So the European heavyweights are enjoying great success in one of Americas weakest eras of boxing history for the heavyweight division. That says a lot.
Lewis was always on T.V here, we were very familiar with him. However, he was an arrogant jerk and people responded as such. Just because people here didn't like him doesn't make us ignorant. Well no one is going to say all Americans are ignorant. However, Calzaghe did make a sweeping generalization as have many in this thread.
In your logic then, American Heavyweights only enjoyed great success during a very weak era of European heavyweight boxing! Times change, no doubt the US will dominate again just give credit where its deserved.
dude stop the bull**** jones didnt want any part of joe neither fact is look at the fight attendance in america and uk..big difference ...also hopkins...jones never left their comfort zones....joes from a tiny lil place called wales....90% of americans still think his ENGLISH, if thats not stupid dont know what is.
some thin skins around here today? You cannot judge a continent (nearly) on a few youtube videos. *Just been on there and watched about a dozen of these 'stupid American' videos and I gotta say that they really are as dumb as ****!!!
What about Joe Cortez allowing Hopkins to hug Calzaghe all night,Euginia Williams going for Holyfield and Adelaide Byrd going for Hopkins!! Only in America as Don would say. :rofl
Lewis is given plenty of respect for his abilities as well. Most Americans on this site have him as a top 10 atg HW. No one denied him anything based on his nationality. None of us even knew who the hell he was. He had that fight against Lacy, and he was given lots of props. HBO immediately put them on their network, and recently told him he was on of their top guys. Nobody here is going to give him respect when he's defending a lightly regarded belt, against guys we don't know, on European T.V. You think Hopkins was embraced from the beginning? The answer is a resounding no. He was damn near 37 before anyone paid any attention to him. Everyone assumed Tito would steam roll him. So I don't want to hear that anti-Euro sentiment bull**** that so many Americans supposedly harbor. No one is given **** in this country. Any respect you get is earned. Calzaghe needs to shut the **** up and realize that as a foreign fighter with a questionable resume, he got respect in America at an earlier age than Hopkins.
I would say the wording of what Calzaghe said is wrong, but I would agree that a lot of americans are ignorant of his achievements but since Lacy a lot of Americans minds were changed... I think the majority of the debate in this thread is ignorant though, select American posters claiming all brits and europeans are ignorant and vice versa, true and educated boxing fans would ignore all that petty crap and appreciate good fighters from all over the world...the world is much bigger than America and Europe.
I find it very ironic that euro and brit are being used interchanbly. I also find it ironic that people think the average USA citizen hates the UK citizens. Nothing is further from the truth. The fact is that most euro countries have a lot more hate for each other than any USA vs euro country individually, except possibly france which both USA and UK seem to have problems with. If I recall correctly the UK and France are bitter, hateful enemies and have been off and on at war since the decline of the roman empire. Now to address the post. The USA is still the top boxing venue. Las Vegas is probably the most exicting city in the world. It is true that the USA no longer dominates boxing like it used to, but we still have our share of belts and top fighters. Bhop, Dawson, Pavlik, Berto, Jones, Mosely, DLH, Malignaggi on and on. Even though boxing has been failing as a sport in the USA we still are coming out with some good talent and I cant back this up but I would wager the USA still has more top 10 fighters in each division than any other country.
I give credit to the Klits. I am not a Klit hater or Euro hater. The other Euro HW not so much not because they are Euro but because they are not that good and not saying I give any American HW credit cause I really don't.
