I would rather watch a fight with atmosphere than a dead Thomas and Mack atmosphere. Calzaghe made more from the fight he had in UK than he would have made from the same fights in the USA.

the gate is just a tiny portion of the income. casino's put up site fees for the event and shell out for the purses. the idea is to draw as much people as possible to waste all their money on betting. add the ppv share, and the money to be earned in the US is one of the reasons big fights happen there.

There was no "atmosphere" or 50K fans for Castillo vs Corrales I and that was a GREAT fight.:deal

you do have a point with joe. calzaghe made a hell of a lot in the UK, as most SMW were based in europe. $ for SMW were there to made in europe then. depends on which division our fighting out of.

this sums up the entirely different sporting culture between the two nations. one of the main aspects of going to a football game for instance in the UK is to experience the atmosphere. it makes the hairs on the back of your neck standup.

I'd like to know exactly how he worded that.

Many Americans are ignorant, this forum is testament to that, but I would never say all Americans are.

yep. it's a cultural thing once again. german fight fans seem to be attending a church service during fights, is it the same in bundesliga?

He probably meant: the creme de la creme of boxers today is not comming from the US - and he is right to a certain degree: all the big american names are really dinosaurs - toney, hopkins, jones. There are not really young stars - except for MAYBE Dawson who has not yet been tested.

i'm not from germany but from what i see on tv the bundesliga have possibly the best atmospheres in europe, especially since their drive to ensure more standing areas in their stadiums.

    Calzaghe is a PR nightmare.

2nd fight in America, says this to a UK paper, and the news travels fast.

Being a Brit, I know how ruthless we can be judging Calzaghe, picking his record apart (well, you did make us that way, Joe, due to an uneventful WBO title reign).

But the Yanks have actually given him respect for beating Hopkins ugly (what other way can you beat BHops?) in America after getting knocked down... and then he goes & upsets 'em before the "moderately big fight". LOL

However, let's not forget he has upset the English before. Saying "I hope England lose" before an important football match a few years ago.

“Americans can’t fight as well as they think they can. They have always been ignorant. That’s why they have never given me the respect I deserve. Things have changed. "

So not only are Americans ignorant according to Joe, but we've always been ignorant.

Americans, compared to Europeans, tend to be less informed of the matters of the world and less knowledgeable about other countries (partly because the US is like a continent of it´s own, while there is more reaction between the many countries in Europe) so the "ignorant" comment is not totally unfounded.

European fighters being better than the American ones is hardly true, but it´s becoming true, especially in the heavyweight division. So while I don´t agree with that comment, it´s not totally unfounded either. Maybe Joe is just pissed off because not too long ago, there was all this talk about "Euro stiffs" and a lot of arrogance being shown by Americans towards the Euro fighters.
