Calzaghe: An Analysis

Markbrooklyn's post didn't say anything about a tarver fight. How did you add all that in there like that?

 

Calzaghe has fought to mnay bums, but the only real super fighter he missed between 1999 and 2005 was RJJ and realistically BHOP was never going to move up to SMW unless he lost his middleweight Titles.

I think Calzaghe should have tried harder to unify the SMW divsion between 1999 and 2005 and challenged RJJ, but I will that his record is not to bad and it is not his falt that Eubanks was faded and he missed the era of Nigel Benn, James Toney and prime Eubanks.

I think terms like "easy win" are used too often when talking about boxing and I'll hold my hands up and say I'm as guilty as the next guy. No win in boxing is easy.. every one involves blood, sweat and tears in the gym if not the ring! More accurately I'd say Joe would be very likely to beat Glen in a fight a super middleweight, which is of course what we are considering here. I don't make that call without thought but rather by by considering how Glen performed at that weight. In 11 fights at super middleweight he lost 6 and none of his wins were over good names. The best record among those he beat was a modest 15-1, the worst a 3-20 and a 9-23. Beating guys with records like that is gonna start getting guys like Joe shaking in their boots!

Yeah Joe was having issues outside the ring, and perhaps that showed in some sloppy fights around that time. What is certain thouh is when the stakes are high he concentrates to the full and produces better performance and often wins more convincingly than he does against so called "lesser" opponents.

 

The differences between Calzaghes and bernards resumes is minimal...

i think their fight could well be the deciding facotor in the 'resume argument'.
