People are only still talking about him because of his stints on some ghey dance show and his raging coke habit. He'll fade into obscurity in time. Far from an all time great. Far from it.
A few compliments and homerism doesn't make a guy an ATG. Even 'enry didn't say that. Aside from the. Aside from UK homerism and the fact that Calzaghe was a talented fighter, what does any of it prove? It doesn't change his resume.
Being undefeated doesn't mean anything. Genuine ATGs have all lost a few. Two weight champs are quite common these days. 20 defenses is quite impressive, but the standard of opposition was largely pathetic. Joe was good and he did well for himself but he's nowhere near the ATGs. What exactly did Joe do to deserve ATG status? Who do you rate him above?
Its not my fault he was around in a bad era, although he could have done more to chase more competitive fights. I like Joe and I credit him most for the Kessler fight. However facts are facts - for whatever reason Joe almost exclusively fought bums and has beens. Although his undefeated and 20 defense record looks impresive on paper Joe didn't do enough to be considered an ATG.
I know Joe's record quite well and I still think it looks weak compared to just about every genuine ATG I can think of. I try not to be too hard on Joe. Although he didn't fully realise his true potential I think in a different era he would have made a truly amazing coal miner.
Agreed. I like Joe and respect his acomplishments. Another three or four big wins over well established fighters earlier in his career would probably do it for me. Shame he fought Bhop and Jones so late. I think Joe really had the potential. Great fighter.
