Would Calzaghe be seen as a great by some of the current doubters if he had won Olympic gold on top of his 45-0 pro record ? I think Calzaghes standing in America would be a lot higher if he had won the Barcelona Olympics ? Robin Reid was selected { won bronze medal} instead, Reid went on to win the WBC title and defend it a few times, Calzaghe beat him for the WBO title. The authorites did not like Calzaghe he was seen as arrogant and big headed ?, Calzaghe Welsh, Reid English ? Calzaghe had a perfect style for amateur boxing, if he had won the Olympic title would he now be seen as an ATG.
i believe that reid was fighting at the now defunct light middle and joe would of been at full middle. it wasnt the arrogance which killed joes olympic dreams but of wanting enzo being in his corner. which is unallowed as enzo wasnt part of the GB boxing team. if he was then it wouldnt matter. he would of had a tough time. it was apretty full division then. a silver medal would of got him a lucrious contract...but lets put this subjectivly mickey duff managed him perfectly. he was well known in the uk but just never fully stepped up when warren got his contract boyed. if he was part of any promotional company he would of done well. but becuase he was stuck on a bum circuit he never could unify.
Sure, a Gold Medal would add to his credentials. It doesn't carry a fighter to the all-time list, but it's a nice early accomplishment, despite the scoring system being vastly different than professional fighting.
:blood:huh ...but...h...he...is undefeated in the pro ranks why would having 4 fights in the olympics effect his fightign mentality. if he did go inot the olympics then he would of certainly got some extra attention...robin reid didnt get anything special and he got a bronze. the whole reason people say the olympics robbed him of that extra bit of fame is beacuse that would mad him able to call names and not sound like a backwater fighter tryign to proove a point. why jones and hopkins never fought him earlier wasnt becuase he was skilled it was becuase he was nothing. a skilled fighter fighting on undercards who was well in to a title reign is a clear sign that he didnt have the pulling power that other champs had. no strong champion or contender would fight (undefeated or not) him because it was pointless. only out of prime fighters who thought they could get back into the elite circuit would fight him. a reason why ottke, a very well promoted and vastly well backed was making good fights was becuase he had a name and gave the challenger a decent amount of cash for just coming over. when fighters lost to ottke they would usually go to calzaghe becuase it was a last chance saloon type scenario.
Moron, the question is this, "Would Calzaghe be seen as a great by some of the current doubters if he had won Olympic gold on top of his 45-0 pro record ?" My point is that having a Gold Medal certainly adds to a person's credentials. I said NOTHING about the Olympics having an impact on his "fighting mentality". You must be slow.
this isnt a chicken and egg question. if a fighter has money and a good backing then he can fight and draw decent fighters to him and thus be prooved greater. a medal gives the owner alot of promotion. oscar made a whole career on it. and he is one of the highest earnign fighters and a certified hall of famer.
You seriously must be ****ing slow. The question is whether an Olympic Gold Medal would improve Calzaghe's standings on an all-time list. NOT whether money and good backing draw a crowd.
