I was just rewatching the Kessler fight and noticed how Calzaghe was very vulnerable to the uppercut. Kessler clocked him with some good shots and just missed many others. Any thoughts on whether Hopkins is going to try to exploit this weakness of Calzaghe's?
Of the fights i have seen, Hopkins rarely ever uses the uppercut, IMO his straght right hand is going to be the money punch as Calzaghe can be open to them aswell.
Joe pressed his advantage in the fight, cranked up the tempo, and in doing so it didnt suprise me to see Kessler landing the uppercut. But Joe knew that this punch alone wasnt going to knock him out, so he made the sacrifice. This one punch alone won't beat Joe, you have to break his rythm, make the fight sloppy, use good positioning, etc. If there is one punch Im looking for from Bernard, its the overhand looping right. I expect it to find its mark but it wont be enough either.
yea i agree hopkins likes to work with the counter n jabs , he does get close but when he des get close he uses his head then moves abck n starts the counterin with jabs his uppercuts would not be in the same power as kesslers anyway!
He can go ahead and try it but Joe has a damn solid chin and he won't be affected by an uppercut from Hopkins, IMO. I have no doubt that Kessler hits harder than Hopkins, and Kessler couldn't really phase Joe, so why should Bernard?
100% agree kessler throws harder than hopkins kessler throws more than hopkins haha do the math right but hopkins is a hell of a lot better techincal fighter n smarter than kessler he will give joe a great fight but this fight wont be joes toughest which will be the eubank fight!
I never made a pick on the fight, so I was just watching for a good fight. But I couldn't understand for the life of me why Kessler stopped using the uppercut he had huge success with in the first 4 or so rounds. It was a lot like Oscar not jabbing Floyd in the 2nd half. But once Kessler started to throw big overhand/straight rights, it was like Cal had radar lock on those and ducked every one over and over.
I agree it's the straight right lead, but Hopkins will be looking for any sloppiness from Him, he will move in and go to work. This will put a change in Calzaghe's strategy to think before he goes on a slap fest. Once that happens he's then fighting Hopkins fight.
Calzaghe got a bollocking from his corner about the uppercuts and made the adjustment. Its wasn't just that Kessler decided to stop throwing them, more that the opening wasn't there later in the fight.
I just watched the fight again on youtube an hour ago and what I noticed was that Kessler didn't necessarily stop throwing, he just stopped connecting. I'm not sure if that's because he got tired and lost some velocity on the shots or if Calzaghe used his brain and starting getting out of the way. It's hard to tell.
That's a fair assessment, but I've watched this fight about 25 times because it was OnDemand and I always watch a fight before I go to bed. Now like you say Calzaghe did make adjustments to prevent Kessler from landing "The Hell" out of the uppercut like at first, but over 8 rounds there were openings for it and Kessler seemed unable/unwilling to fire.
