Calzaghe Appreciation Thread!!!

Calzaghe's skilled, sure, but Hagler was better in most of the departments you listed.

 

I only listed 4 departments.

Size is Calzaghe all the way.
Speed is debatable because they use them in different manners.
Skill advantage is debatable because one is more orthodox and the other is very unorthodox. Both are very skilled in their respective styles. Both are very smart.
Chin's don't punch each other, the only reason I posted that is because it's difficult to see either one getting messed up by the other in a KO. That's all the chin is for. They both got hard chins.

 

Calzaghe, his promoter and his shitty WB0(gus) run are the epitome of eveything that is wrong with boxing today.

 

feints, dodging, cheating, jabbing, infighting, straight-shooting, upper body movement, footwork

 

They have two very different styles. You can't say one guy is better than the other in those skills because they use them very differently. They are just both very skilled.

 

I appreciate JC for sure. Watching Martinez today I couldn't help but think he looked like a poor man's Calzaghe with less stamina, only he has power. Calzaghe was truly elite. He never held or used spoiling tactics, just ***** slapped his opponents to victory. One of the toughest H2H styles to come up against that I've seen.

Calzaghe fights were often times horrible to watch. Boring personality, too. Too many 12 round slapfests that were a cure for insomnia don't sit well with boxing fans.

Dude, he fought at 178. Most Super Middleweights (168 at weigh in) would gain just as much as he did on fight night. Normal poundage goes to about 10 lbs after rehydration. He basically didn't have a size advantage against other SMWs of the very modern era. He would have a massive size advantage against the middleweights of the 80s just because is the only reason that size is being brought up.
