Calzaghe couldn't have done any better in terms of comp than he did.

Agreed and again, as said, there were plenty of names out there that he never fought or never tried to fight. This in no way means he isnt a great fighter....on the contrary, many of these names never mentioned his as well. BUT, you cant say he fought everyone he could have. That statement is ridiculous.

Tho I must say, his resume is WAAAAAY better then people give him credit for. Eubank, Reid, Mitchell, Lacy, Kessler, Bika, etc. All good to very good fighters.....none great (and no, I dont think Kessler is great...he is SEVERELY overrated...said he was overrated beforehand, and he is even moreso now).

I agree 100%. It's a shame really. As talented as Calzaghe is, with a fan friendly style of fighting, he could have been bigger in the US as well with the right fights.

warren should have got his man to dump the wbo title and set up an eliminator with the ibf.

but warren never wanted that cos he knew he'd lose out in a purse bid. but that was the only way he was gonna get ottke to fight joe.

Couldn't agree more. That joke organisation was allowed to dictate far too much of his career so he could wear their bauble.

i had to go to boxing rec to look at the timeframe.

glen johnson was a super middle between 99 and 2000 where he racked up losses to sosa/vanderpool/branco/ottke/sheika/kiwauka? never heard of him/ and at the time was just seen as a journeyman losing fighter .

he simply did not have the name /backing or credibilty to get a calzaghe fight at the time and his name never came up.

he moved up to light heavy and was rejuvinated.

its possible the hopkins fight which i did see put a huge dent in johnson and made him a bit gunshy as hopkins was prime and possibly fought his best ever fight.

he really did a number on johnson from the opening bell and never stopped actually the agtessor pushing and bullying and hitting johnson all around the ring from the first bell.

sounds weird now considering the 2 fighters styles of today but prime hopkins was a beast as you know and formiddable.

wish a lot of the uk esb posters could see that version of hopkins.

i think this lacy type beating put johnson back a good 2 years before he regained his edge.

    yep.

but to warren it was all about money.

they could have done the same thing to get roy jones in the ring.

but again warren could have faced the prospect of losing a purse bid.

clinton woods done that and fight academy never promoted that show.

But if nothing else, Warren is a shrewd businessman. You can probably count on one hand the amount of shows he's actually lost money on in the last 10-15 years. He knows how to protect his assets. It's not good for boxing but it's up to the Ricky Hattons of the world to take a stand.

At the end of the day, for whatever reason, Calzaghe didn't and it's not through a lack of ambition.

You are aware that they WERE supposed to fight until a Calzaghe injury sidetracked it?

Regardless of what boxrec says, most (and I mean MOST) of those fights were robberies and hometown decisions. And I am serious about that. Johnson has been on the bum end of more decisions than any other fighter in recent memory.

I am with you tho, I would favor Joe in this...but just because he would win, doesnt mean that it would not be a good fight/win for him. And again goes back to the fact that Joe HASNT fought the best fighters at or around his weight class.

And we all know, I mean no malice at this...I love Joe as a fighter....but I wont agree with the original post of this thread. Its insane to say he fought the best available. Completely insane.

it was around 2004/05 that he was supposed to meet johnson and pulled out twice .
calzaghe was meant to step up to light heavy

i saw glen johnson v ottke live, they gave ottke a massive ring and johnson could never really get near him and was tearing his hair out in frustration, descion was fair.

i saw the vanderopol fight on tape and that was also fair vanderpool to fast and skillfull

never saw the sheika fight, i read it on boxing news and they said it was very close.

totally calzaghes fault both times , but as a super middle no one from the american media or uk boxing press ever mentioned a johnson v calzaghe fight once that i can recall.

and i am one of warrens biggest critcs , i hate the man what he does to british boxing and he has milked calzaghe dry and some of the oposition has been utterly shameless because he likes to pay opposition peanuts and always wants options scaring good fighters off.

how he has the cheek to complain after fights in intervirews these were legit defenses and credible calzaghe opponents is beyond belief.

You don't sound like you know a whole lot about him.

He could NOT have moved down. He has trouble making 168 as it is.

He could have moved up and tried for lt heavy.

At the time that might have been interesting, Roy was at light heavy. Calzaghe would be #2. Maybe he preferred being #1 where he was to moving up to LHW.

Bernard stayed at middle even though he began at lt heavy and said himself that he would probably be more comfortable there.

His resume at middle is no better than Joe's at SMW. he could have moved up too, but he was chasing a record. After he stopped winning at MIDDLE, he moved up to 175.

Joe's resume is just fine as it is. You have to fight whoever is there. and he's done that.

WWE is on tommorow mate, enjoy.
