One lucky swinger to Jermaine Taylor's chin and it could be Jeff Lacy again by this time next week...

Actually, I may start the 'OMG, Calzaghe Is Scared To Fight Lacy' thread on the general forum myself if that happens ;)

He'll beat Dawson, Taylor probably has a few wins by then and its his turn, he beats Taylor and its he only fought Taylor and Dawson to duck a rematch with Bernard then Kessler has improved he'd beat Joe this time, then someone else has come through, Froch will be about aswell, its never ending. There isnt really a fight out there for him where you think "oh yeah that must happen"

I rate Dawson fairly highly, but theres still a couple of question marks over the guy.
Skill wise he's great, and he's a joy to watch. e'd obviously pose a much greater challenge than Roy did yesterday, and even though Calzaghe would wear him down some, he wouldn't evaporate anywear near as quickly as Jones did.
I think Dawson poses his toughest test now, but if I was forced to pick a winner, it would probably be Calzaghe. Dawson's great with his angles and all, but Calzaghe would smother him enough to put him off his game, and I think he'd win via UD after coming home much stronger.

The fight wont happen though because Dawson isn't a big enough name at this point in time.

I think it was a little unfair of Kellerman to bring that up after the fight, if you didn't know boxing you'd be forgiven for thinking that Dawson was this big, bad destroyer hanging over Calzaghe.

They always do it in fairness. They are always looking to the next fight for a fighter after a win, its a natural question.

Especially if its an American guy, they are looking after their own interests.

Unfair? It was in poor taste! They never asked Dawson why he wasn't fighting his bloody mandatory challenger, did they!?:-(

Apart from being American, and possibly over hyped - what do Lacy, and Dawson have in common style wise? They appear to be pretty different boxers to me. I don't buy the line that because Joe beats one young American fighter he suddenly walks over all other young American fighters.

Thats true, the "next fight" question is fair game but it was Kellermans angle that theres only one man left, undefeated...etc that seemed OTT to me.

    Nobody said they are.

But there are some parallels. Lacy was getting the same, if not more hype to fight Calzaghe. It seems its just starting with Dawson. Everyone wants him to fight on until he loses.

Calzaghe kicks his ass and everybody will mention how Johnson already did it and he was overhyped. The Lacy amnesia.

It's a nothing fight for Joe to take.

    They are completely different.
But I'm still not quite sold on Dawson yet. Theres just one or two things about him that dont fill me with confidence, and if anyone will exploit those areas in him, it'd be Calzaghe, and perhaps even Hopkins.
I'd still tip Dawson to beat hopkins, but he could very well pave the way for someone else to do the job.

OK, but away from all that malingo - if Joe is fighting again it is the best fight out there, imo. It's far more credible then his fight last fight.

I have a feeling if he fights again it may be Froch though. Joe will beat him all day long.

Well...they do have different styles, but why do you assume Dawson's style is worse for Calzaghe? Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but for all we know, Lacy could have KOed Calzaghe with his power...Dawson couldn't do it; he doesn't have more than average power. Is speed and combinations then the way to beat Calzaghe? I think that's not enough.

To beat Calzaghe, it seems you need:

    1. great footwork to keep him off you, at the right distance
    2. great counterpunching ability/timing
    3. great defence, a killer right hand and a nice left uppercut.
    4. great ring-generalship and craft/intelligence

    Alternatively:

    1. great pressure fighting ability with all that entails: strength, toughness, stamina, chin, power, heart
    2. great defence
    3. speed

Is this a picture that reminds you of Dawson? I think it's more of a combination of Reid and Hopins, or Johnson with some Hopkins qualities thrown in, to be honest.
