Yea, I quite like a few things about Dawson (I like his hand speed, and he also has a bit of power...) - but as you say there are some other questionable factors there. He certainly isn't proven to be the complete package yet.
Froch has to beat Pascal and Calzage has to decide to fight on. Which he probably won't make public, he'll keep his cards close to his chest and see what offers come in. We are getting a bit ahead of ourselves. I can not see Dawson coming up with the money to tempt Calzaghe. He does not have that sort of appeal or popularity. Nobody even knew him in the US until he beat Tarver. I don't think he brings anything legacy wise that will motivate a guy like Joe who has been around the block now. I'd be amazed if it happened.
Dawson isn't bad in most of those departments from what I have seen of him. His chin is suspect but Joe is never going to knock him out. His lack of activity, and stamina would perhaps be his main downfall. As I said though I think Joe would beat him, I just think that it would be a live competitive and interesting fight - If Joe was to fight again that is of cause.
Yeah, interesting fight...and Dawson is very good and all; I just think people exaggerrate the extent to which his qualities and style is actually bad for Calzaghe, great and difficult as they are.
Joe doesn't have to knock him or anybody out. He only has to get your respect and he is on top. Then you are forced to back up given Calzaghe's volume and speed. That is going to be easy to achieve with Dawson's chin and durability.
He looks like a million dollars for 3-4 rounds, and then, he looks less good, suddenly. He's used to having his way too, for the early rounds, with fighters just taking it. Calzaghe, however, would slap the **** out of him early on, and teach him his place, as soon as Dawson thinks he's getting the upper hand. He couldn't bag all the first couple of rounds with impunity, as he's used to, either. Being so inexperienced, and not the most intelligent, mentally strong or cool customer out there by any means, he could easily lose the plot badly, with Calzaghe dominating him clearly for the rest of the fight. Even if he wins as much as 5 rounds, say, can he win more? I strongly doubt it. Calzaghe would find his number by then for sure! It's not like Dawson is an adaptive, flexible fighter. He does what he knows best, and he doesn't really have a plan B... Calzaghe would eat him up and spit him out, imposing his will on him and crushing his spirit.
Close one. dawson's fast and his movements good. His defense seems to be improving as well. I'd narrowly favour Calzaghe but Dawsons as big a threat as Hopkins imo.
You're a ****ing moron, Dawson has looked good in all his fights except against Johnson, but since then he has improved which was evident in the Tarver fight. Fighting against four top contenders means he's experienced you dumb *****. Really your analyst sucks and you're just mad because Dawson hasn't faced Diaconu yet. As for Dawson vs Calzaghe, I predict Dawson will beat Calzaghe convincingly if they fight. Dawson will use his speed and reach to counter Calzaghe every time he tries to get in. Dawson will attack to the head and body, pulverizing Calzaghe every minute. You want to see Dawson at this best, just wait till he faces Calzaghe. He will unleash his full offense arsenal, which he didn't do against Tarver. Dawson when or if he wants can overwhelm his opponents when he puts his combination's together combined with his speed. If Dawson beats Calzaghe you will look like a fool for saying what you said.
1.Dawson has good footwork and he always fights his opponents at a distance that best suits him 2.Dawson is a very good counter-puncher 3.His defense improved after the Johnson fight which was evident against Tarver 4.Dawson's ring-generalship and intelligence is good, not the best, but his skills make for it.
I fear that Chad Dawson would be one fight too many for JC...I truely believe that, with JC's declined physical ability, that Dawson holds more advantages than disadvantages in this fight....the guy is incredibly fast and has demonstrated that is a very sharp, counterpuncher which can give JC problems. The stamina issue is the one of course that gives me hope...as Dawson has shown that he can fade down the stretch...Calzaghe would certainly make him work for every minute of every round another thing he isn't used to but would it be enough? I'd probably make Dawson a 60 - 40 favourite these days... It seems that Calzaghe might actually be up for this fight though according to the General Forum. He deserves MASSIVE credit from everyone if he takes this fight, he really does. Dawson is far more of a threat than Pavlik ever was.
He didn't fight Johnson at a distance that suits him best. His weakness is under pressure. His defence may or may not have improved. Of course it looks like it improved when you are fighting an old man that hardly threw a punch like Tarver. Calzaghe looked like Whitaker at times against Jones. If Dawson fought a Johnson or a Calzaghe I doubt we would be saying his defence looks improved.
