Calzaghe - does he not have one of the most over glorified resumes in boxing history?

  1. 8-3-1 is a little much. The most I'd have it is 7-5 Eubank. I'm fine with 8-4 but as I have said previously 6-5-1 is optimal with 7-5 being acceptable. A draw is fine but that is being generous. Joe had three decent rounds (all occurring in the first four rounds). Only the first round was strongly definitive (because of the flash knockdown - little was on it (as usual), but Chris got caught moving backwards with his chin up and no guard). If you turn off the sound and count clean and effective punches you'll see Joe digressed from the fifth through the end. He loses on rounds and he loses on clean punches. He also was clearly behind on powershots. Chris was gassed from the beginning (we both know he was on the slide, had to cut for the fight, and it was relatively short notice) but he still hit Joe with the same right hand repeatedly and Joe couldn't avoid it, he just took them. In Chris' own words, "Just a basic, straight right hand lead (Joe) he doesn't seem to see." No bull****, no nuthuggery.

Joe is actually one of my favorite fighters from the UK. I've been aware of his career since around '95 as I have Welsh family. But I've never seen so many over the top fans like on ESB. Being his compatriot or being nationalistic shouldn't make you see things that just are not there. His is a good fighter. He is very, very fortunate that a multitude of big names ended their careers for varying reasons in the mid-90s. He (and Warren) avoided risk and difficulty intentionally. ELITE, great fighters don't need to do so. It may happen but they don't need for it to happen. Joe needed it because he was really good, but not really great.

You want to blow your Joe doll up every night and that's fine. But just because you want to wear blinders doesn't make your assessment correct. I do question that "dominant" victory because it was nothing of the sort. He wasn't the champ. He was the aggressor but he basically walked into right hands and threw some bs punches that didn't do anything. They weren't clean, they weren't effective, and they usually missed. Whereas, Eubank threw less but when he connected (and there were plenty) they were solid power shots to Joe's grill or body. I don't think it was a great performance by Eubank. How could I? But, I certainly know it was nothing like that for Joe either. He merely surprised some and thrilled a nation that he was competitive throughout in a close fight. I understand how biased it is over there and how tough it is to accord a fighter of color respect (look at how long it took for various names to gain real acceptance during the course of their career) as I saw it here with Clay/Ali as I grew up. Many white fans over here dissed him and then switched to begrudging respect as his career came to an end and the times changed a bit.

BHOP wasn't prime against Trinidad. That is a bull**** belief that only a kid or a fool could accept. He was almost 37. I've been watching Hop since the early 90s. His entire career basically. And you call me a muppet? STFU.

The way you describe his opponents is not really fair or accurate.

He is over glorified especially in the uk,casual boxing fans belive he is possibly the finest fighter of all time. The fact is he spent a lot of his career building up his record against lesser fighters, this would have been ok had there not been big fights out there for him to take.He took fights against the likes of Pudwill and shieka when he should have been pushing to fight the likes of Jones or Dariusz. He always seemed to find it hard when he moved up in class Brewer gave him a load of bother as did Reid(who i thought would have won but for the ref) The only world class fighter i remember him stopping was Woodhall. He did ok towards the end of his career but in my opinion only the Lacy fight really proved anything Kessler made the fight worth watching in thier match up,and i think would win a rematch,Hopkins was robbed and Jones was past it.Calzaghe was a good fighter not great just good.
