Calzaghe fanboys! Convince me that Joe deserves to be ranked higher than RJJ or BHop!

As you're about the only person still banging on about Jeff Lacy, I'd say that process has mainly already occured. Fortunately Calzaghe secured far more impressive wins than that over Lacy in the meantime, and it is on those that his legacy rests.

    :D Touche!

And that's not what I call it exactly anyway. And it is a valid viewpoint IMO, seeing as I've never had the pleasure of seeing Robinson fight at 147. The best three fighters I've ever seen h2h are mid-60s Ali, lightweight Duran, and 93-97 168 Jones Jr, and I think that version of Jones would have been more difficult for anyone who fought at or around that weight to defeat. Do you think this is obscene/absurd/just plain garbage??

Talented fighter, never fought good enough opposition to ever prove how talented. Might sneak into a p4p top 100, could have been better though, we'll never know.

So Kessler and 43-year-old Hopkins then??

You still don't get that it doesn't matter how old someone is, just how good they are.

A 43 year old who is good enough to be consensus top four P4P amongst current fighters is exactly as good a win as a hypothetical 28 year old who is good enough to be consensus top four P4P amongst current fighters.

And if beating a top four P4P fighter isn't a pretty solid basis for a legacy, what is?

I remember a similair point of view concerning Ricardo Lopez. Now it's gone full circle and he's often overated.

Marciano was underated in his time.

20:20 hindsight tends to grant people a new vision concerning how an unbeaten fighter is viewed. The same thing will happen with Joe.

Not garbage, no, but Roy had chin problems. He had a very special skillset, but he never fought many great punchers. When his speed deserted him he got knocked out.

And guess what. When you match him with some of the best ever, he's in with guys who know how to cope with speed and who are very fast themselves, often.

It was a great win, I give you that, but it is tainted for me because the win was achieved through superior workrate against a 43-year-old with stamina issues - Hopkins was clearly the more skilled operator on the night. If Calzaghe had beaten Hopkins in 2002, then for me it would be a far far FAR better win than Kessler, but as it is I can't decide between them both, as Hopkins is now past-prime and Calzaghe performed far better in the Kessler fight.

However, even if you rate his win over Hopkins much more highly than I, we are talking about 2 genuine quality wins out of 46 (ie wins achieved against top notch opposition) - is that enough to guarantee ATG status or top 100 p4p OAT status? I'm really not sure it is. And I'm certainly sure it means that he doesn't deserve the status he is afforded on this site.

Do you think there has been anyone who has fought at or around 168 that would have beaten the 1994-96 Jones Jr? If you struggle to come up with a few names, then my viewpoint is at least valid and should not be ridiculed, even if you do disagree.

PS: I have been meaning to ask you, what's your opinion on Gene Fullmer?
